Wagner’s March 1st Saturday Open House: The Science of Shells

March 2 @ 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Learn about conchology (the study of shells) and the role of mollusks in our ecosystem, and explore the Wagner’s extensive shell collection!

MARCH’S FIRST SATURDAY OPEN HOUSE

The Science of Shells

Join us at this month’s Saturday Open House and dive right in to the world of Conchology – the study of Mollusk shells. Our founder, William Wagner, collected shells throughout his life and travels, leaving behind a vast collection of diverse specimens from around the world! On display you’ll find a wide variety of shells in all colors, shapes and sizes. But mollusks are not just important for their beautiful shells – they play an important role in our ecosystems. Did you know that shelled creatures like mussels filter water and keep it clean? Partners from the Discovery Center will join us to talk about their work to improve water quality right here in Philadelphia through their mussel hatchery.

Throughout the day, there will be themed scavenger hunts and activities for families and children of all ages. Learn about the 19th century art of intricately carving conch shells to make cameos and try your hand at it! You can also create your own shell casting to learn how shells become fossils.

As always, the Exhibit Hall will be open for self-guided exploration of the natural history collection throughout the day. The collection includes over 100,000 natural history specimens, including ancient fossils, glowing minerals and animals from around the globe.

Free admission to the museum and program; donations are encouraged!

A dream that keeps growing…

In 1855, William Wagner had a dream of providing free science education to anyone who wanted to learn, regardless of background or ability to pay. Today, the Wagner offers more programs to more people than ever before! Your support helps us provide free education, not only through the museum, but through a wide range of courses, lectures, field trips, and children’s science programs. Donations also assist us in caring for the museum and library collections and in preserving our wonderful building, which was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1990. To learn more about what we do please visit our website.
