Using old books and specialty paper we’ll sew our own handmade books!
Join us for an evening up taking apart and putting back together! We will repurpose old books, cereal boxes, and cardboard combined with specialty binding techniques. You can bring your own paper if you’d like to customize your book into a lined notebook, or if you have pieces that you want to incorperate into your book. Our finished books will act more as sketchbooks or artist books (unless you want to add the lines yourself?!)
The logistics: Everyone signing up will have the opportunity to make their own book and we will have enough supplies for everyone. If you know you would like to repurpose an old book you can either bring your own hardcover book to take apart or you can use one of the many we have to offer. If you’re going for more of a back pocket, travel, foldable situation then using cardboard and cardstock will be best for you! Either way we have all the supplies, but welcome any personalized additions that you may want to bring as well.
We will be focusing on making the book rather than filling it. If you have previous book binding skills then you may have time to start decorating and filling your book with collage supplies that we have on hand.
Some people will not finish their book with us but we will send you home with the supplies (everything but a sewing needle!) and instructions to hand sew your book yourself. If you arrive on time and get right to assembling your book you can absolutely finish with time to hang out and decorate a couple pages together.
This is a loose book making session that has a lot of room for personalization! Shown in the images are different books made with this same style by different artists. Show up with an open mind, maybe some random paper you find in the recycling, and some creative ideas and you’ll end up with something super FUN!
Organized by The Craft Coven, this event is part of a paper and collage based art show we that will be on display next door in studio 15. Check out that Mixed Media Mayem event
The Location: This event is held at The Craft Coven’s space in Cherry Street Pier. We are located in studio 14 on the second floor. Unfortunately there are no elevators to the second floor. You will need to go up a very large flight of steps to get to the workshop. The space is heated/cooled inside the pier and there are bathrooms located on site (on the first floor). There are often installations and events around the pier, and the larger space is open from 12-8pm everyday.
