Tree House Books names Lynn Washington, owner of Books & Stuff, the 2024 Champion of Literacy at upcoming event
This annual event celebrates literacy and the work of Tree House Books in North Philadelphia
PHILADELPHIA, May 2, 2024 – Nonprofit literacy center and giving library Tree House Books is planning their annual Champions of Literacy event on May 19th, 2024 from 5:30pm to 8:30pm at Victory Brewing Company, 1776 Benjamin Franklin Parkway, in Philadelphia. Tickets start at $85 and are available on the Tree House Books’ website www.treehousebooks.org. This annual fundraising event supports the work that Tree House Books does to encourage literacy among students outside the classroom, to build home libraries across the city, and celebrates their unique impact on the North Philadelphia Community.
This year, Tree House Books is excited to honor Ms. Lynn Washington, owner of retail bookstore Books & Stuff. A long-time supporter, Ms. Washington has been curating a “book of the month” children’s book selection specifically for the Tree House Books community for over 18 months. These selections of books feature Black characters and authors that Lynn donates brand new to Tree House Books for distribution in our community. Lynn has participated in our annual Philadelphia Literacy Day event and champions Tree House Books throughout the city. Additionally, Lynn has been a force for Black children’s literacy throughout her life – making her a deserving Champion!
Upon receiving the news that she was getting this award, Ms. Washington stated, “Tree House Books and Books & Stuff are on the same page! I am honored to have my efforts acknowledged by this important community organization.”
More about Lynn Washington:
For 28 years her job as the Design Studio Supervisor at The Free Library of Philadelphia was to create print materials and exhibits with the goal of informing, encouraging and promoting literacy. She also began selling books and gift items on weekends at Uhuru Flea Market.
Understanding that having their own home library was as important to a child’s literacy development as belonging to a public library. And also wanting to provide an opportunity for adults to purchase, quality, high priced books at a significant discount; Lynn would open Books & Stuff in Germantown in 2015.
During the 5 years as a brick and mortar she met many like minded customers who would become collaborators in the mutual effort to encourage literacy, particularly among the youth populations in Philly.
Since closing her shop and going online in 2020 she’s continued to enjoy creating ways to promote literacy online, vending at events and expanding partnerships with organizations like Tree House Books, by providing them with the books and stuff they need to continue our mutual goal of encouraging literacy in Philly!
More about the event:
The evening will also be filled with food and samplings of Victory beers, live musical entertainment, a silent auction, and special guests. They would ask you to please consider joining them for this event.
