“Three of a Kind” Opening Reception

Three of a Kind is on view from September 15 to October 20 in the Barn gallery space at Bartram’s Garden. The opening reception is on September 15 from 5-8PM and will feature DJ Papo. The Mshindas will host an open mic poetry event on October 20th for the closing reception from 5-8PM. For more information, contact vinyltap215@gmail.com. 
 
Three of a Kind brings together the creative practices and artworks of family members DuiJi, Kara, and Dahra Mshinda. In this one-of-a-kind collaborative exhibition, the Mshindas share a collection of artwork that ranges from figurative to abstract drawings, photographic portraiture, assemblage, and playful installations of toys and items from the Mshindas’ daily life. Since 2020, daily routines have needed to be both flexible and resilient. This collection is an expression of how one family has dealt with grief, loss, and isolation during these COVID-19 years. Three of a Kind not only showcases the artistic synergy of an artist family it also seeks to celebrate art as a family endeavor that inspires and supports the creative pulse in the art community more widely.
 
The Mshinda family consists of visual artist Kara Mshinda (b. 1978), interdisciplinary artist and DJ, DuiJi 13 (b. 1975), and Dahra Naomi Garcia Mshinda (b. 2014). Kara is an instructor at Tyler School of Art and Architecture where she teaches on themes of race and identity in American art. DuiJi is Logistics Director for VinylTap215, a collective of Philadelphia-area DJs who hold monthly events that center community, music education, and well-being. Dahra is a dancer who attended Gwendolyn Bye Dance Center from 2017-2022. In her spare time, Dahra enjoys creating mixed-media art, spending time with family, and playing Minecraft with friends.
