The Potential for Mycofiltration of E. coli Pollution in The Crum Creek Using T. versicolor and P. ostreatus

The Philadelphia Mycology Club  welcomes you to join us in our fifth installation of bimonthly meetings at the Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences! We are excited to have a regular meeting space to work on some more in-depth community science projects and to welcome academic and professional mycologists to speak to our community about their work.

Event Description:

Mycoremediation is a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional wastewater and drinking water treatment, as well as other environmental remediation methods. This project will design a mycofiltration system using mushroom species Trametes versicolor and Pleurotus ostreatus. Water from a section of the Crum Creek, located in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, U.S.A, will be sampled and filtered through this system to remove Escherichia coli (E. coli). The mycofiltered water will be compared to the Environmental Protection Agency standards for E. coli concentrations in recreational and drinking water to measure how effective T. versicolor or P. ostreatus may be at removing E. coli present in freshwater drinking sources.
