The Battle of the Vines: Mount Vernon Cemetery Civil War Veterans Tour

April 19 @ 11:00 am - 1:00 pm

A guided tour devoted to those who fought for freedom during the American Civil War.

Many of you have asked for it, and we’re both honored and pleased to finally be able to offer it to you: Mount Vernon Cemetery’s first ever CIVIL WAR VETERANS TOUR.

After 3 long years of battling the vines, the Friends of Mount Vernon Cemetery have located a sizable number of graves of those who fought (and in some cases died) during the American Civil War.

Join us for this inaugural off-roads guided tour that is not only designed to take visitors all throughout the property’s 28 acres of rolling hills and overgrown fields, but will include a diverse selection of incredible stories about MVC’s more significant veteran burials. Stops and stories include: medal of honor awardees, naval engineers, men killed in the Battles of Gettysburg and Williamsburg, famous physicians, a POW of Libby Prison, a member of the Pennsylvania Cavalry who went on to become the city’s first mass murderer, and more!!

The tales (and tombstones) the Friends have unearthed for this tour are truly incredible. We look forward to sharing them all with you, many for the first time.

For those of you who are into historical reinactments, feel free to dress in costume!

This tour is sponsored and conducted by members of the Friends of Mount Vernon Cemetery.

Reminders:

  • Please meet at MVC’s main gate. Located at the corner of Ridge and Lehigh Avenues.
  • The tour will be going offroad. Regardless of weather – or costume – we strongly recommend wearing comfortable closed-toed shoes.
  • It is essential to arrive on time. If you arrive late, once the gate is closed and locked, there is no coming back for you.
  • MVC is in a court-appointed conservatorship. As such, all visitors will need to sign an access waiver. Paperwork will be provided to you upon arrival.
  • All visitors are required to follow all rules and guidelines set forth by the cemetery’s conservators and by the Friends of Mount Vernon Cemetery. Failure to adhere to these rules will result in immediate expulsion from the grounds without refund, and you will be banned from participating in future MVC public events.
