Sewn in America

August 6 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm
Discover how sewing shaped American life before ready-to-wear fashion. Based on the DAR Museum’s 2024 exhibition…

Based on the DAR Museum’s 2024 exhibition, this program explores sewing as both a way to earn a living and a form of individual expression.

Before ready-to-wear fashion became common in the 20th century, sewing was a vital skill that shaped daily life.

The program highlights how American women used their sewing abilities to furnish homes, support themselves financially, and showcase their creativity and skill—while also drawing connections to contemporary examples.

About the presenter:

Liz Bauer is a volunteer docent for the DAR Museum in Washington, D.C., where she presents programs highlighting the museum’s collection focused on the American home. She lives in Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia with her husband and two young sons. Liz also volunteers as a garden educator at a local arboretum. As a sewing enthusiast, she is always interested in learning new sewing skills and techniques.
