Outdoors Online – Insects in Art Through History

August 20 @ 10:30 am - 12:00 pm

From the dawn of history to the present, bees and insects have been depicted in carvings, jewelry, coins, songs, tools, sculptures, and paintings. Consider the great cultural heritage of insect art found throughout the world, whether super-charged with the science of new knowledge, symbolic and fantastical features, and, at times, otherworldly meaning. Bees and bugs have been part of nature-based “cabinets of curiosity,” stand-ins for saints, and admired for their dance of life.

Join arts educator Lynn Berkowitz for a virtual discussion of the fascinating depictions of insects through art. With artists who range from Maria Sibylla Merian, Jan van Kessel the Elder, right through the newest public art of Matthew Willey, artist and founder of The Good of the Hive, our artful conversation includes historic to contemporary images, a diversity of artists, and short enlightening videos.
