Lenape Nation of Pennsylvania for Heritage Trees on Death Row at FDR Park

BACKGROUND
The next phase of the Master Plan for FDR, Park, with the support of Fairmont Park Conservancy, calls for the demolition and removal of 441 trees – 64 of them heritage trees. Their demolition will pave the way for nine synthetic turf fields, 14 courts, and 170 parking spaces. The Lenape Nation of Pennsylvania has co-signed a letter to the Mayor to ask for a pause in the plan. Led by Chief Chuck Gentlemoon and Clan Mother Shelley DePaul, they will be leading a ceremony to bless the trees. “We acknowledge all creatures as relations,” Shelley says – “These trees are our elders and deserve respect.”

The ceremony will be held on March 10th, 1PM-3PM at the Meadows. GPS: “FDR Community Clubhouse, 1954 Pattison Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19145” Anyone is welcome to attend. There will be a drumming circle and participants will be invited to make prayer ties to wrap around the trunks of the trees. Please come out and show your support for the protection of this land, the Delaware River and our elder relations as well as the habitats they support!
