Invādō: Printmaking with Plants w/ Nicole Duprée

May 6, 2023 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Make botanical prints and learn the art of hapazome to transfer natural color to fabric and and paper. Adults Only.

Visitors and artists (14+ and adults) are invited to make botanical prints and transfer natural color and textures of leaves and flowers to fabric and paper.

Take a walk in the park and talk about the “invasive” plants and common garden weeds in the area. Then create nature prints using organic waste from gardens and park maintenance.

The word “invasive” from in- (meaning “in, inside”) & vādō (“to go, to rush, to walk”) is used to define species of thriving plants that are causing economic or environmental harm, or are otherwise seen as weeds or unwanted plants in cultivated green spaces. Many of these unwanted plants also have great potential as natural color and use in art projects In this program, we will:

+ Take a walk in the park!

+ Learn to identify some local plants commonly regarded as weeds and/or are listed on state and federal invasive plant lists.

+ Learn and discuss the terms: invasive, native plants, non-native plants, weeds

+ Explore printmaking methods to capture the shape, texture, and/or color of plants on paper and fabric:

– hapazome/tataki-zome: “leaf dye” or leaf hammering to transfer color to fabric or paper

– hand burnishing nature prints

– Rubbings with handmade beeswax and peach pit charcoal color blocks

+ Create a collection of prints to take home!
