Hybrid Valley Talk: Postcards from the Wissahickon with David Bower

The period between about 1898 and World War 1 is known as the Golden Age of Postcards, with U.S. Postal Service estimates of a billion postcards mailed and collected. Join long-time steward of the Wissahickon and our 2019 Volunteer of the Year, David Bower, as he shares highlights from the more than 3,000 Wissahickon postcards filling 18 albums that he’s collected from that time over the past three decades. A natural storyteller, David will connect his postcards’ views of the Valley Green Inn, Historic Rittenhousetown, bridges, and even some things that no longer exist, to the past, present, and future of Wissahickon history and culture.
After a 30-year career in retail management, David worked as the volunteer coordinator for Philadelphia Parks & Recreation for 18 years, retiring in 2016. He joined FOW’s volunteer corps in 1992, the same year he started collecting postcards from the Wissahickon he loves.
