Forgotten Histories: The Original Brown and Copper-Colored People of the United States
New presentation delves into the little-known history of the original Indigenous inhabitants of the United States, who were labeled as Negroes and became the first American slaves.
Philadelphia, PA – Indigenous Education, is pleased to announce a new presentation titled “Forgotten Histories: The Original Brown and Copper-Colored People of the United States.” This presentation tells the story of how the original Indigenous inhabitants of the United States were labeled as Negroes and became the first American slaves, and it explores the conditions that led to their servitude and the ways in which their status as slaves persisted throughout the entire slave trade.
The presentation also references the laws that were created that made all slaves and dark-complexioned people African in descent, and it examines the ways in which these laws have had a lasting impact on society and continue to shape contemporary issues of race and identity.
“Forgotten Histories” offers a rare opportunity for visitors to learn about a little-known but important aspect of American history and to gain a deeper understanding of the roots of contemporary issues related to race and identity. The presentation will be on held February 18th 11 am -1 pm at The Free Library of Philadelphia and is free and open to the public.
