Help us as we count the birds at our feeders for the Audubon’s Christmas Bird Count.
Learn to identify and count birds at our feeders! This winter tradition helps the Audubon and PEC to track and learn more about the birds that live and visit our area. Young birders & beginner birders are encouraged to join.
The Christmas Bird Count (CBC) is a long-standing program of the National Audubon Society, with “over 100 years of community science involvement. It is an early-winter bird census, where thousands of volunteers across the U.S., Canada count birds in established locations December 14 to January 5.”
This year, we will count birds December 16 at our feeders for all skill levels to join and learn more about birds, counting birds, and the importance of Citizen Science.
Count volunteers will be counting every bird they see or hear. It’s not just a species tally—all birds are counted all day, giving an indication of the total number of birds that live/visit the Center.
While this is an opportunity for all birders to join, if you are an experienced birder and would like to learn more about additional count events, email [email protected]. Stephanie Robinson, Environmental Education Specialist at Pennypack Environmental Center, is the liaison for the Pennypack Valley count circle (Code is PAPV), led by Compiler Peter Kurtz.
Parking is available at the center with additional street parking.
The center, bathrooms, and picnic areas are all accessible, however, the trails are rocky and uneven.
Photos will be taken of participants during this program for use by the Pennypack Environmental Center and Philadelphia Parks and Recreation. If you wish to opt out, please let us know before the program.
