Ben Franklin Celebration, “The Future of Oceans,” honoring Sylvia Earle

This event was established to bring attention to Franklin’s ideas and accomplishments and highlight his relevance in the modern world.
Join us at the American Philosophical Society on January 20, 2023 for the 2023 Ben Franklin Celebration, “The Future of Oceans,” honoring Sylvia Earle.
At 10 a.m., the morning will kick off with an introduction by Charlotte Hudson, Director of the Lenfest Ocean Program, Pew Charitable Trusts. Helen Rozwadowski, professor of History and founder of the Maritime Studies program at the University of Connecticut and Irina Marinov, Associate Professor of Earth and Environmental Science, Long Term Guest Investigator, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution will each give a talk on the current health and what the future holds for our world’s oceans.
At 10:30, Charlotte Hudson will moderate a discussion with the two speakers.
At 11 a.m., the 2023 Ben Franklin Founders Award will be given to Dr. Sylvia Earle, after which Dr. Earle will give a talk on “The Future of Oceans.”Following the event, there will be a procession to Ben Franklin’s grave in Christ Church Burial Ground.
