All Aboard! Philly’s Broad-Ridge Subway, and PATCO to NJ
January 13 @ 1:00 pm - 3:30 pm
Jerry Silverman will lead us on a tour of the Broad Street and Ridge Avenue Subway lines, as well as the PATCO line to Camden.
The theme is WHAT IS NO LONGER, AND WHAT NEVER WAS.
Jerry Silverman leads us on a tour of the Broad Street and Ridge Avenue Subway lines, as well as the PATCO line to Camden. Travel the subway south to the stadiums and north to Fern Rock, where the subway actually exits the tunnel. From there, we take the Broad-Ridge Express Spur to 8th and Market Streets and then board PATCO for a ride to Camden and back.
Along the way, see old subway cars rusting at Fern Rock Station, ride through ghost stations, and lament the train lines to Cheltenham, Darby, Germantown, Northeast Philly, and others that were never completed. Additionally, Jerry discusses the terracotta mosaics hidden inside the Ben Franklin Bridge, the never-used trolley terminal under the Bridge Plaza, and previews the soon-to-be-reopened Franklin Square Station.
Whew! Don’t miss this chance to explore Philly’s underground transit—you’ll never look at Philly’s subways the same!
Guide Jerry Silverman was born to give this tour. He was the very first rider ever on PATCO as a teenager, and later served as chair of the SEPTA Citizen Advisory Committee.
***PLEASE NOTE*** You will need to purchase one SEPTA and one PATCO fare. If you haven’t used SEPTA before, arrive a little early and we’ll help get you set up. For PATCO, be prepared to spend an extra $1.40. Jerry will have change. NO BATHROOMS EN ROUTE.
