Join Jonathan Wilson (Associate Professor of Environmental Studies) for a look into his cutting-edge research!

450 Million Years of Novelty and Convergence: A Brief History of Plant Evolution

The evolution of land plants transformed the planet: from providing the basis of complex terrestrial ecosystems, reshaping the physical environment of the Earth’s surface, to transforming the chemistry of the ocean and atmosphere. The history of plant evolution—preserved in the fossil record—contains a record of these changes and the plants that drove them, with their surprising morphologies and novel vegetative and reproductive features. In this presentation, Jonathan will explore the evolutionary history of plants, from the cryptic origins of the earliest land plants to the rise of extant biomes—while exploring, along the way, some of the unusual, extinct plants that remain enigmatic today.
