Philadelphia wants you to plant a tree in your yard. And they’ll even give you one for free!
The City of Philadelphia has set an ambitious goal to plant 15,000 new trees in 2012; a plan that aligns with Mayor Nutter’s Greenworks Philadelphia target to plant 300,000 trees by 2015. To help with this mission, Parks & Recreation has launched their TreePhilly campaign. The initiative aims to mobilize Philadelphians to plant and maintain trees in their communities.
TreePhilly is offering trees for big and small yards, including varieties like Sugar maple, Sweetbay magnolia and River birch. Besides providing aesthetics, these trees can have great benefits for you and your community, like improving air and water quality, and providing energy savings through the lowering of air and ground temperatures.
If you don’t have a yard, you can also request a free street tree (call 215.685.4363). The Parks & Recreation department will provide instructions on planting and proper care. To request a tree, call 215.683.0217 or visit treephilly.org. The deadline is this Saturday, March 31, so apply now!
