Image via pennsylvaniahorticulturalsociety.orgDo you dream of getting down and dirty in your very own community? Well, the Philadelphia Horticulture Society is here to help with their annual Garden Tenders program, a six-session self-help course for starting and maintaining a community garden.
The course is open to individuals, community groups, organizations, educators as well as any other aspiring city-sowers. And no matter if your green thumb pines for soil at the park, church, school, or unsightly vacant lot around the corner, Garden Tenders will unearth the secrets of nurturing your garden dreams from the ground up. Participants will learn organizational skills for forming partnerships, acquiring a site, finding neighborhood resources and recruiting volunteers. They will also dig right in with lessons on horticulture basics and garden maintenance.
The Garden Tenders course costs $25 and includes six Wednesday evening sessions (March 28 to May 9) and an optional tour of community gardens. The sessions are 5:30-8:30 p.m. at the Philadelphia Horticulture Society (100 N. 20th St. Fifth Floor).
