A career in science may not seem like a dream job to most middle school students, but the Academy of Natural Sciences is hoping to change that. Thanks to a $25,000 grant from FMC Corporation, a Philadelphia-based chemical manufacturer, the Academy will hold two career days for Philadelphia public school 6th through 8th graders and their teachers.
The career days will be used to help teachers integrate math and science into everyday curriculums as well as talk with students about career opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and math. Students will learn about the Academy’s afterschool activities, like the free Women in Natural Sciences program for under deserved high school girls, and hear from Academy scientists about how they became interested in the field, and applied school learning to their career. The goal is to have students make connections between what they’re learning in the classroom and future science professions.
For information on participating in the career days, teachers can call 215-299-1060.
