It’s definitely commendable for a fashion company to utilize eco-friendly materials. But a company that is strictly devoted to the pursuit of a healthier environment immediately earns my respect. United by Blue (UBB), a Philadelphia-based fashion and apparel company focusing in organic t-shirts, jewelry, and bags, does just that.
United by Blue is determined to go beyond just making a profit, they are dedicated to taking a stand on diminishing ocean waste. The company’s founder, Brian Linton, hopes to gradually remove the junk that has been piling up for decades in our oceans. The cause is dear to his heart, having grown up by the ocean. He has witnessed firsthand the horrendous effects of rubbish at home, and throughout his travels around the world.
“Because the oceans are so vast and deep, consumers have the mentality of “out of site out of mind” and this needs to change,” says Linton.
For every product United by Blue sells the company promises to remove one pound of trash from the world’s oceans and waterways. UBB’s employees, interns, and volunteers continuously carry out cleanups in Pennsylvania, New York, Virginia, New Jersey, Delaware, Washington D.C., Connecticut, and Maryland. As of today, UBB has removed 11,726 lbs of trash.
UBB will host it’s next Philly clean-up Saturday, April 9th from 10am-1pm at Bartram’s Garden (54th St. and Lindbergh Blvd.) More information can be found here.
