That’s why we want to praise a couple Philadelphians who took a more active approach to time off this past Martin Luther King Day. Two volunteers, Julius Ferraro and Jaclyn Pompa, members of Public Outreach, a fundraising organization that raises money for non-profit groups, used their day off in South Philly to travel door-to-door collecting books for the Philadelphia READS Book Drive. By the end of the day, Julius and Jaclyn had collected over 525 books and took them to one of the only drop sites open, Mugshots Coffeehouse, where even more volunteers were waiting to sort through the contributed books.
Philadelphia READS, a non-profit organization, has worked since 1998 to strengthen the literacy skills of young, underprivileged school children through a variety of events and book drives like the one that took place on Monday.
Mugshots Coffeehouse will still be accepting books until tomorrow. So, if you would like to donate, make your way out to Mugshots in Fairmount and help out.
BOOKS are so important. With all the technology available today I fear books may become a thing of the past. That would be very sad. My hat is off to the folks who used their time for this great service.
