Food & Water Watch, a non-profit that works to make sure the food, water and fish we consume is safe, accessible and sustainable, recently unveiled a new website called Factory Farm Map. The site is a serious wake up call for anyone unaware of the sprawling presence of factory farms in the U.S. The map on the site is color coded by factory farm density level—with light peach signifying that there are no factory farms in the area and red signifying an extreme density level. There is also an option to view areas where the production of certain animals is highest and lowest.
I went ahead took a look at the levels in our home state of Pennsylvania. The map featured a mix of colors, with red zones in Lancaster County, Bucks County, York County and Lebanon County.
The website also features factory farm facts from the U.S. and specific states. Here’s one about PA:
The more than 3.7 million egg-laying hens on factory farms in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania produce as much untreated manure as the sewage from the Columbus, Ohio metro area.
