We are all still feeling a little shaky, with the economy struggling back from the brink—but forward progress has not ground to a halt. Just last week, on the eve of Earth Day, Mayor Nutter announced that the city of Philadelphia, its partners in the Metropolitan Caucus and a coalition of public, private and non-profit partners has received a $25 million “Recovery Through Retrofit” grant from the U.S. Department of Energy.
The application progress for this grant was very competitive, with over $3.5 billion in applications. Philadelphia’s Director of Sustainability Katherine Gajewski said the strength of Philadelphia’s application was in the city’s partnerships, and all of the collaborative work that has been done so far.
The grant will be used to fund energy efficiency retrofit projects for residential and commercial buildings throughout the greater Philadelphia region. These efforts are expected to create hundreds of jobs and save millions of dollars in energy costs over the next several years.
