Beginner Birding with The Free Library of Philadelphia

Meeting at Joseph E. Coleman Library (68 W Chelten Ave)
Distance: 0.5 miles
Difficulty Level: Easy (flat walking)
Audience: All Ages
Parking: There is metered parking behind the building, and a free lot at the corner of Armat and Greene Streets.
Restrooms: The bathrooms at the library will be available for use.
Join Friends of the Wissahickon, The Free Library of Philadelphia, and Friends of Vernon Park for a beginner’s birding stroll through Vernon Park—no experience or equipment needed. We’ll meet at the Joseph E. Coleman Library to go over some basics, then make our way over to the park to see which backyard birds have made their home in this urban green space.
If you have binoculars, bring them along; otherwise, we’ve got you covered! You can also stop by any Free Library branch before the day of the hike to pick up a Birding Backpack, stocked with everything you need to get started, including binoculars, a field guide, and a Wissahickon Valley Park map.
Registration is required for all events so that participants can be informed of weather or other emergency cancellations. Unless otherwise specified, guided hikes may be on rocky, rugged trails that may be wet and slippery. Wear sturdy shoes or boots with socks. Walks are cancelled in heavy rain or icy conditions. Service animals are always welcome. For more information contact Marisa Miller at miller@fow.org.
