SUMMARY:Lights Out Philly
DESCRIPTION:Why Lights Out\n\n\nEach year\, tens of million birds pass through Philadelphia during the spring and fall migration. Unfortunately\, many are killed when they fly into buildings\, confused by artificial lights at night or by reflective or transparent glass surfaces. Artificial lights at night can attract birds migrating at night to buildings and ultimately cause them to collide with other parts of the buildings associated with the lights. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat is Lights Out\n\n\nLights Out is a voluntary program that involves turning off and/or blocking as many external and internal building lights as possible at night\, when bird migration is occurring during the spring and fall. \n\nFAQs for Property Managers\n\n\n\n\nFrequently Asked Questions\n\n\nWhat is Lights Out? What is involved in the program? How do I participate? Turn off lights from midnight to 6am and help save birds and money. \n\nLights Out Philly Fact Sheet\n\nParticipate in Lights Out Philly\n\n\nWhether you are a building owner\, tenant\, business\, or resident\, you can join us in helping to prevent night-time bird collisions during the months many are migrating. SUMMARY:Lincoln Drive Clean-Up
DESCRIPTION:Meeting at Historic RittenhouseTown\nParking: There are several small parking areas at Historic RittenhouseTown and more free parking along nearby neighborhood streets. See map for details.\nBathrooms: None\nJoin Friends of the Wissahickon for a special large-scale clean-up along Lincoln Drive! For this effort\, the Drive will be closed from Wissahickon Avenue to Ridge Avenue\, providing volunteers with safe access to a heavily traveled road. By removing litter along the roadway\, we can prevent trash from washing into the creek during rainstorms and help protect habitat and stream health.\nAll are welcome to attend\, and no experience is needed. We encourage attendees to work within their own comfort level\, and we always strive to accommodate needs on an individual basis. With that being said\, this service day may include the following activities:\n• Litter clean-up\n• Hiking up to 2 miles (we’ll be traveling up and down Lincoln Drive picking up trash)\nWe provide gloves\, tools\, and instruction–you just need to show up! Be sure to wear sturdy footwear and long pants\, and remember to bring water with you. Detailed information and confirmation of the meeting location will be sent by email one business day before the event. If you are hoping to bring a group of 5 or more people\, please reach out to us first. For more information contact Marisa Miller at miller@fow.org.\nRegister Below!

SUMMARY:The Cloverleaf Challenge: A Choose-Your-Own-Distance Hike
DESCRIPTION:Meeting at Valley Green Inn\nFour leaf clovers are special and a recognized symbol of luck and rarity. Join Trail Ambassadors Lisa Kleiman\, Susie Gettes\, Debra Brackett\, and Margaret Kinnevy for a cloverleaf-shaped hike exploring four quadrants of Wissahickon Valley Park—hike 1\, 2 3\, or all 4 ‘leaves’—there is a distance for everyone! How many can you complete!?\nOur hiking adventure will start at Valley Green Inn. We will hike a cloverleaf loop\, returning to Valley Green after completing each of the 4 different loops\, passing many Wissahickon landmarks along the way. At the end of each loop\, you can choose to continue onto the next loop\, or call it a day! Mileage options will be approximately 3.5\, 6\, 8.5 and 11 miles. Anticipated elevation for the first half of the hike is 600 feet\, and approximately 1000 feet for the full 11 mile hike.\nThe terrain is hilly with rocks and roots\, and depending on the weather the trails may be muddy as well\, so come prepared! Our route will provide hikers with the opportunity to hike both alongside and high above the creek\, affording beautiful springtime views. Restrooms available at the beginning and end of each loop at Valley Green. Hikers should come prepared with plenty of water and snacks\, and clothing layered for the weather.\nDistance: 3.5/6/8.5/11 miles\nDifficulty Level: Moderate-Difficult (some inclines and declines\, uneven surfaces)\nAudience: Ages 18+\nParking: There are three lots near the Inn. The northern parking lot can be accessed by Wises Mill Road\, and the southern by Valley Green Road. Overflow parking is in the Upper Lot.\nRestrooms: There should be bathrooms available outside of the Inn.\nRegistration is required for all events so that participants can be informed of weather or other emergency cancellations.\nUnless otherwise specified\, Trail Ambassador Walks may be on rocky\, rugged trails that may be wet and slippery. Wear sturdy shoes or boots with socks. Walks are cancelled in heavy rain or icy conditions. Service animals are always welcome. For more information contact Marisa Miller at miller@fow.org. Visit www.fow.org for updates.\nRegister below!

At this First Saturday Open House visitors will learn about insect behavior and eating habits\, learn tricks for capturing bugs in the wild\, and discover different techniques for insect preservation. With the help of an entomologist\, folks will also get the chance to pin their own insect specimen to take home with them. \nThe Wagner’s entomology collection and host of other natural history specimens will be available for self-guided exploration throughout the day in the Exhibit Hall. Browse ancient fossils\, glowing minerals\, and animals from around the globe. Visitors can wander at their own pace\, follow the path of one of our themed scavenger hunts\, or even fill in a coloring page with images from the Wagner’s library! \nAdmission is free to everyone and donations are welcome to support our mission. \n \n\n\n\n \nThings to Know Before Your Visit\n• Walk-ins welcome! Advance registration speeds your entry to the museum. SUMMARY:Exhibition Tours: Bodies & Souls
DESCRIPTION:The Bodies and Souls tour explores the Kohler Collection’s eclectic and deeply human approach to figurative art\, following works collected by Philadelphia‑based collectors Robert and Frances Coulborn Kohler. Focusing on art made primarily in the second half of the twentieth century\, the tour examines how artists have used realism and representation as liberating tools to explore embodied experience\, including gender\, sexuality\, interpersonal relationships\, psychological states\, and connections to home and community. \nBeginning in the 1980s\, the Kohlers committed themselves to collecting works by living artists who employed representational and realist methodologies at a time when figuration was often dismissed as conservative. Bodies and Souls challenges that assumption\, demonstrating how these artists used figuration to claim visibility\, agency\, and autonomy on their own terms. Featuring more than 120 works given and promised to PAFA\, the exhibition places artists from diverse communities and geographic regions into dialogue\, celebrating the power of representation to affirm kinship\, pleasure\, resilience\, and the fullness of human experience—while honoring the Kohlers’ extraordinary generosity and long‑standing devotion to artists. \nTickets Include: \nAll day museum admission\n20% off food & drinks at the PAFA Museum Store \nContent Warning: Bodies & Souls contains mature subject matter. Recommended for adult audiences; parental discretion is advised.
