SUMMARY:Screening: "You Don't Have to Go Home\, But..." by Aidan Un
DESCRIPTION:You Don’t Have to Go Home\, But . . .by Aidan Un (USA\, 2024\, 78 min) is an ode to dancing bodies\, a grimy love letter to Philly\, a story about what to do when the DJ has played the last song\, the club’s lights come on\, and you gotta go . . . somewhere. Following dancers at different stages of their artistic lives\, with legendary party Second Sundae as backdrop\, this film examines the possibility of spiritual fulfillment in a socioeconomic configuration that ultimately doesn’t value the practices that make us free. \nThe evening will also feature the next generation of storytellers\, opening with “Hop Hop Life”\, produced through Scribe’s Documentary History Project for Youth (DHPY). The event will also feature appearances by Second Sundae dancers who helped shape the scene\, joining Un for a post-screening discussion about the community\, history\, and influence of hip-hop culture.

SUMMARY:Habitat Advocate: Native Garden Design for Stormwater Management
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to transform your stormwater chaos into a creative conservation landscaping project!\n\n\nWith increasing storm intensity\, are you discovering more water on your property than you can manage? In this course\, you’ll learn how to calculate the rain runoff volume of impervious surfaces (roof\, driveway\, etc.) and how to transform your stormwater chaos into a creative conservation landscaping project. Participants will practice the math calculation skills on-site at Tec Centro. \nParticipants will receive the planning tools needed to navigate their stormwater issue with more insight and ease! \n \nThe Lancaster Conservancy has protected over 11\,000 acres of natural lands\, which are critically important to supporting biodiversity. Smaller patches of native habitats spread throughout urban landscapes are also essential to creating corridors of habitat – food and refuge – for wildlife. This is why we are offering our Habitat Advocate classes at Tec Centro in Lancaster City. \nThe cost of the Habitat Advocate classes covers instructor fees. If the cost of this class is prohibitive\, please reach out to Keith Williams\, VP of Engagement and Education\, at kwilliams@lancasterconservancy.org. \n \nYour Presenter\nElyse Jurgen\, owner of Waxwing EcoWorks Co.\, is a community collaborator working to rebuild ecological literacy and biodiversity through hands-on ecological gardening experiences in South Central PA. She is certified as a Chesapeake Bay Landscape Professional and Ecological/Permaculture Designer\, along with earning an Ecological Gardening Certification from Mt. Cuba Center. She has a master’s degree in Environmental Education\, 7-12 Biology Teaching Certification\, and participated in Cornell University’s Civic Ecology program. \nElyse works alongside homeowners in a participatory approach to their gardening for wildlife needs\, infusing educational opportunities during the design\, installation\, and stewarding process. She invites homeowners to deeply engage with their land to maximize its potential in enhancing human well-being and supporting dwindling wildlife populations. \n \nAbout this Class\nOpen for general admission\, no prerequisite necessary for this class! Attendees ages 16 and over are invited but must be accompanied by an adult if younger than 18. \nLearn more about Habitat Advocate classes and certification here. \n \nRefund/Cancellation Policies\nRefund Policy: If you are unable to attend this event after purchasing a ticket\, refund requests must be made at least two weeks before the event. \nCancellation Policy: This event will be held rain or shine\, with cancellation for severe weather made at the time of the event. If the Conservancy reschedules the event\, attendees will be emailed and tickets will be automatically moved to the new date. If the Conservancy cancels the event\, attendees will be notified via email when possible and refunded. \nPhoto Credit: Elyse Jurgen of Waxwing EcoWorks Co. \nThank you to our host Tec Centro and partners Waxwing EcoWorks Co. and the Spanish American Civic Association (SACA)!

SUMMARY:Photo Weaving workshop
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever looked at two images and wondered what they might say to each other? In this hands-on workshop\, artist and educator Kara Mshinda will guide participants through the art of photo weaving — a simple\, tactile technique that layers two photographs together using a classic basket weave pattern to create an entirely new image. \nWorking with pre-cut image sets featuring the birds\, flowers\, trees\, and waterways of Bartram’s Garden\, you’ll weave together photographs to create new compositions that blur the boundaries between species\, seasons\, and moments in time. No previous experience needed — just use your hands\, your images\, and your instincts.

Advance registration is required.\nThe exact walking tour meeting location will be emailed to registrants approximately two days prior to the event. \nClick here to register.\nThe Chestnut Hill Conservancy invites you to step back into the Gilded Age with Discovering: Victorian Chestnut Hill\, a guided walking tour led by local architectural historian\, lecturer\, and Our Town columnist George McNeely. This in-person tour will explore the “top of the hill” neighborhood\, which flourished after the arrival of the first railroad terminus in Chestnut Hill in 1854\, kicking off the dramatic transformation of this town.\nThat railroad opened the area to Philadelphia merchants and professionals who sought respite from the congestion and pollution of the city. The next several decades saw an explosion in the planning of new streets across nearby farm fields and the construction of proud suburban “villas” in the Italianate and Gothic Revival styles. Some were designed by Philadelphia’s more important architects\, including Samuel Sloan and Theophilus P. Chandler. Many of those houses have survived mostly unchanged\, offering a wonderful opportunity to explore the prosperous “top of the hill” neighborhood that was the center of Chestnut Hill before Henry H. Houston and his son-in-law\, Dr. George Woodward\, developed the West side.\n“The parade of well-preserved Victorian villas along both sides of Summit Street represents a rare glimpse back into the early decades of the Gilded Age and would make a perfect setting for that television series\,” says McNeely.\nThis walking tour will provide insight into the architectural details\, urban planning\, and historical context that shaped this distinctive neighborhood long before the development of Chestnut Hill’s west side.
