SUMMARY:Miracles on Market Street
DESCRIPTION:How Philadelphia’s Golden Age Retailers Celebrated Christmas with historian Thomas Keels and author Lawrence Arrigale.\n\n\nPhiladelphia historian Tom Keels and Lawrence M. Arrigale return to Ambler Library with a presentation on their book\, Philadelphia’s Golden Age of Retail. “Miracles on Market Street” shows how Philadelphia’s many department and specialty stores enticed and enchanted holiday shoppers\, from the Colonial Easter Village at Lits\, to Snellenburg’s Mother’s Day Flower Show\, to Gimbels’ Thanksgiving Day Parade\, to the Dickens Village at Strawbridge & Clothier and the Christmas Light Show at Wanamaker’s! This presentation features dozens of fascinating images from holidays past\, but shows how some of Philadelphia’s old traditions still survive today in various locales.

SUMMARY:How Women Saved the World's Fair in Philadelphia
DESCRIPTION:The Forgotten World’s Fair of 1926\n\n\nPhiladelphia historian and author Tom Keels will present an overview of the Sesqui Centennial\, the forgotten World’s Fair of 1926 \,and how Philadelphia women defied a corrupt organization to create some of the fair’s most memorable monuments. \nOne of the few bright spots of the Sesqui-Centennial was the High Street of 1776\, a recreation of a Federal-era Market Street lined with 22 reconstructions of vanished historic structures\, from William Penn’s Slate Roof House to the Jefferson Declaration House. Created by the Women’s Committee\, the Street of 1776 was the Sesqui’s most popular single attraction\, and one of the few to turn a profit. Other popular attractions created by women included Sulgrave Manor\, a replica of the ancestral English home of the Washington family. \nAbout Tom Keels: \nTom Keels is the author or co-author of seven published books on Philadelphia history: Wicked Philadelphia: Sin in the City of Brotherly Love; Forgotten Philadelphia: Lost Architecture of the Quaker City; Philadelphia Graveyards and Cemeteries; Philadelphia’s Rittenhouse Square; Chestnut Hill\, and Philadelphia’s Golden Age of Retail (with Lawrence M. Arrigale).

SUMMARY:Wondering About Wampum
DESCRIPTION:Join Chris Applegate from the Museum of Indian Culture in Allentown\, PA to learn more about how wampum beads were produced and traded.\n\n\nWondering About Wampum. Presented by the Museum of Indian Culture \na Special Program is for Teens and Adults \nAlthough shell beads have been around for thousands of years\, the cylindrical white and purple beads we recognize as wampum were mainly produced after European contact. Steel tools facilitated drilling the long\, small diameter holes. These beads held more value than their beauty. Colonists used them as currency. Native communities used them to commemorate important events or send messages. \nJoin Chris Applegate from the Museum of Indian Culture in Allentown\, PA to learn more about how wampum beads were produced and traded. Once in Native hands\, the beads were made into strands or woven into “belts” that could be used to identify the bearer\, send a message\, or record a treaty. \nMethods of bead weaving are demonstrated. The historic and current significance of well-known belts including the William Penn Belt\, the Hiawatha Belt\, and the Two Row Belt is covered. \nAfter the presentation\, attendees are encouraged to use the pump drill and bow looms that have been demonstrated. \n \nAccessibility Check-in: please contact us if you would like an accommodation to access this program
