SUMMARY:City Nature Challenge 2026
DESCRIPTION:The City Nature Challenge (CNC) is a four-day bioblitz where cities around the world record as much wildlife as possible. \nWildlife is measured by the total number of observations\, the number of species and the number of people making observations. CNC is also a great way to engage in community science and help document the biodiversity of our urban areas. \nThe event takes place using the iNaturalist website and app. Any observation photo\, geotagged from anywhere in the seven-county Philadelphia area (Philadelphia\, Delaware\, Montgomery and Bucks counties in Pennsylvania\, and Camden\, Gloucester and Burlington counties in New Jersey) and time-stamped during the four days of the event\, will count toward Philadelphia’s tally. Follow the Philly area’s progress on the CNC Philly iNaturalist page: City Nature Challenge 2026: Greater Philadelphia Area · iNaturalist \nExplore along with the Academy community through our home on iNaturalist\, the Academy Naturalists project group! \nVisit the CNC Philly home page for detailed instructions on how to participate. This annual event is organized by Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County and California Academy of Sciences. \nHow to Get Involved\nDownload iNaturalist – Create a free account in the app or at iNaturalist.org.\nMake Observations – Take photos of your findings anywhere in the Challenge Area between April 24 and April 27 and add to iNaturalist.\nJoin an Event or Explore on Your Own– Attend an in-person event led by naturalists and community scientists or photograph wild species in your neighborhood\, local park or backyard and upload them to iNaturalist.\nSpread the Word – Invite friends\, family\, classrooms\, and community groups to join the challenge.\nIdentify – Continue to upload and identify your photos on iNaturalist until the results are tallied on May 9. \nThe Conservatory at Laurel Hill Cemetery West\nSaturday\, May 9\, 2026\n10 a.m. – 1 p.m.\n225 Belmont Ave.\, Bala Cynwyd \nJoin Laurel Hill and ANS staff along with naturalists\, hobbyists and professionals as we learn how to identify species in the cemetery and arboretum. Bring the whole family for iNaturalist tutorials\, interactive games\, basic exploration of taxonomy and classification\, with snacks and conversation about the importance of biodiversity and environmental literacy. \nThe City Nature Challenge allows all to explore local ecosystems\, build observation skills and contribute to real scientific research. The Academy partners with community organizations and public agencies to encourage schools\, educators\, families and neighborhood groups to participate and make City Nature Challenge 2026 one of Philadelphia’s most inspiring and successful community science events yet. \nAs Philadelphia celebrates the 250th anniversary of the United States\, the City Nature Challenge offers a powerful reminder that the story of this city is still being written — not only in its historic landmarks and neighborhoods\, but also in its rivers\, forests\, meadows and the countless species that call it home.

SUMMARY:Boneyard Bookworms: June Discussion
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to join Laurel Hill’s book club which reads and discusses a wide range of genres and topics\, from historical nonfiction to contemporary novels\, from science and medicine to memoir and humor. \nIn June we’ll discuss The Garden Against Time: In Search of a Common Paradise by Olivia Liang. In this insightful book\, Laing\, inspired by her own restoration of a walled garden\, delves into the profound connection between gardens and the human experience\, especially during challenging times. She unearths the rich history and symbolism of gardens\, examining how they embody ideals of utopia\, memory\, and culture. Laing also thoughtfully questions the privilege and exclusion often involved in creating these “paradises\,” and considers the possibilities for new ways of living in our complex modern world. Part memoir\, part historical inquiry\, “The Garden Against Time” offers a unique perspective on personal creativity and the deep relationship between individuals and their green spaces amidst personal and societal shifts.

SUMMARY:Philly Goat Project Christmas Tree-Cycles
DESCRIPTION:The Philly Goat Project’s Christmas Tree-Cycle Festivals are back! This year Philly Goat Project is hosting three Christmas Tree-Cycle events\, the first two at their home at The Farm at Awbury Arboretum and the third at Laurel Hill West Cemetery. \nEvent Details:\n● Saturday\, January 4\, 2025 (Rain date: January 5) – The Farm at Awbury Arboretum\n● Saturday\, January 11\, 2025 (Rain date: January 12) – The Farm at Awbury Arboretum\n● Saturday\, January 18\, 2025 (Rain date: January 19) – Laurel Hill West Cemetery \nAll three events take place from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM. \nThese highly anticipated events are family-friendly farm festivals in support of the nonprofit. There is a $20 donation requested per Christmas tree. These donations support Philly Goat Project’s free year-round programming\, including community goat walks\, children’s literacy events in libraries & schools\, environmental education events throughout city parks\, youth job training programs\, animal-assisted therapy events\, and bereavement programming. \nDonated Christmas trees provide delicious snacks for the goats\, and what they don’t eat is turned into wood chips for trails in city parks and community gardens thanks to a partnership with the Philadelphia Sanitation Department. Decorations should be removed from trees before donating them. \nGuests can enjoy an afternoon packed with activities at this year’s Christmas Tree-Cycle festivals\, including: \n● Farm Explorations: Discover the magic of the farm.\n● Roaring Fire Pit: Warm up with free s’mores and hot cocoa.\n● Games: Kids can participate in fun games in the Farm Olympics at Awbury and games for all ages at both locations\n● Goat Petting Zone: Meet and cuddle the goats of Philly Goat Project.\n● Quiet Visiting Area: A calm space for guests with special needs.\n● Philly Goat Project Swag Tables: Swag will be available\, including Philly Goat Project’s 2025 calendar showcasing the goats at Philadelphia landmarks. This year’s calendar features the goats on Lincoln Financial Field\, home of the Philadelphia Eagles\, and on stage at the Kimmel Center alongside the Philadelphia Orchestra. \nAttendees are welcome to join the festivities even without a tree. \nSee Philly Goat Project’s social media and website for more details!

SUMMARY:GOAToberFest
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, October 6\, from 3:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M.\, Philly Goat Project invites you to its 3rd Annual GOAToberFest fundraiser at the beautiful Laurel Hill West Conservatory. \nThis fundraiser is packed with engaging activities\, including goat art raffles and historic cemetery tours. Spend the afternoon with Philly Goat Project’s 13 beloved goats\, sip on signature cocktails\, sample tasty snacks\, play yard games\, and enjoy s’mores by the fire pit. Attendees aged 14 and older are welcome to attend. \nGOAToberFest guests will be the first to see and purchase the signature 2025 Goat Calendar\, which features the goats posing at iconic Philadelphia landmarks like the Philadelphia Orchestra’s stage at the Kimmel Center and Lincoln Financial Field\, home of the Philadelphia Eagles. \nShirts exclusively made for GOAToberFest will be available for purchase designed by local artist M. Dougherty\, a multidisciplinary artist specializing in scent art and olfactory research. \nNew at this year’s event is a very special GOAToberFest beer partnership with Triple Bottom Brewing\, a woman-owned craft brewery and Certified B Corp whose mission is to create fair chance\, long-term\, living wage jobs for people who have experienced homelessness or incarceration. Triple Bottom Brewing will be rebranding their signature Oktoberfest Crunch Beer with a Philly Goat Project GOAToberFest label done by a local artist Jessica Kat Miller\, and it will be available exclusively at the fundraiser. Guests can enjoy the special beer at the event as well as purchase four packs to take home with them with 50% of proceeds going to the nonprofit. The timing is perfect for this partnership because Triple Bottom Brewing has just launched the Future of Service Apprenticeship Program — a paid\, 16-week training program for people impacted by the justice system or housing insecurity to develop valuable job and life skills and secure quality jobs in Philly’s hospitality industry. Philly Goat Project is excited to support their mission and share the special commemorative beer cans with attendees. \nThe featured signature cocktail at this year’s GOAToberFest is a twist on the Midori Splice called the Ray Ray in honor of Ray the goat. Ray is named after Raymond Pace Alexander\, a lawyer who became the first Black judge to be appointed to the Common Pleas Court and the president of the National Bar Association. He is buried in Laurel Hill West Cemetery. \nCostumes are highly encouraged\, with both Oktoberfest and Halloween-themed outfits welcome. There will be special prizes for the best costumes\, so come dressed to impress! \nProceeds from GOAToberFest support the vital programs of Philly Goat Project\, including early literacy\, environmental education\, animal-assisted therapy\, community wellness\, teen job skills training\, and a new bereavement support initiative. The event is possible with support from Philly Goat Project’s community partner\, Laurel Hill. Together\, they offer a tangible way to talk about sustainability – in both life and death. \nTickets are $75 each . The event will take place rain or shine. Laurel Hill West Conservatory is located at 215 Belmont Avenue\, Bala Cynwyd\, PA\, 19004. \nJoin Philly Goat Project for the G.O.A.T. event of the season!
