SUMMARY:The Cloverleaf Challenge: A Choose-Your-Own-Distance Hike
DESCRIPTION:Meeting at Valley Green Inn\nFour leaf clovers are special and a recognized symbol of luck and rarity. Join Trail Ambassadors Lisa Kleiman\, Susie Gettes\, Debra Brackett\, and Margaret Kinnevy for a cloverleaf-shaped hike exploring four quadrants of Wissahickon Valley Park—hike 1\, 2 3\, or all 4 ‘leaves’—there is a distance for everyone! How many can you complete!?\nOur hiking adventure will start at Valley Green Inn. We will hike a cloverleaf loop\, returning to Valley Green after completing each of the 4 different loops\, passing many Wissahickon landmarks along the way. At the end of each loop\, you can choose to continue onto the next loop\, or call it a day! Mileage options will be approximately 3.5\, 6\, 8.5 and 11 miles. Anticipated elevation for the first half of the hike is 600 feet\, and approximately 1000 feet for the full 11 mile hike.\nThe terrain is hilly with rocks and roots\, and depending on the weather the trails may be muddy as well\, so come prepared! Our route will provide hikers with the opportunity to hike both alongside and high above the creek\, affording beautiful springtime views. Restrooms available at the beginning and end of each loop at Valley Green. Hikers should come prepared with plenty of water and snacks\, and clothing layered for the weather.\nDistance: 3.5/6/8.5/11 miles\nDifficulty Level: Moderate-Difficult (some inclines and declines\, uneven surfaces)\nAudience: Ages 18+\nParking: There are three lots near the Inn. The northern parking lot can be accessed by Wises Mill Road\, and the southern by Valley Green Road. Overflow parking is in the Upper Lot.\nRestrooms: There should be bathrooms available outside of the Inn.\nRegistration is required for all events so that participants can be informed of weather or other emergency cancellations.\nUnless otherwise specified\, Trail Ambassador Walks may be on rocky\, rugged trails that may be wet and slippery. Wear sturdy shoes or boots with socks. Walks are cancelled in heavy rain or icy conditions. Service animals are always welcome. For more information contact Marisa Miller at miller@fow.org. Visit www.fow.org for updates.\nRegister below!

SUMMARY:Valley Talk - The Wizard of the Wissahickon: The Life and Legacy of Johannes Kelpius with Timothy Grieve-Carlson\, Ph.D.
DESCRIPTION:In person at the Valley Green Inn or online on Zoom\nIf you’ve spent any time in Wissahickon Valley Park\, you’ve probably walked past the Cave of Kelpius and taken a moment to read the paragraph written on the weird obelisk next to it. Maybe you’ve even googled the name “Kelpius” and learned that he was the leader of the first American “doomsday cult.” Unfortunately\, most of that information is wrong.\nThis talk is going to present research from my new book\, American Aurora: Environment and Apocalypse in the Life of Johannes Kelpius\, where I dig into the history of Johannes Kelpius\, a tremendously influential but comprehensively misunderstood radical Protestant theologian from Transylvania who settled in what is now Wissahickon Valley Park in 1694. Far from being the leader of a “doomsday cult\,” Kelpius was a Christian hermit who remained socially engaged with his neighbors in Philadelphia and cultivated a unique religious interpretation of the Wissahickon Valley and the natural world.\nTimothy Grieve-Carlson\, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor and the Gibson Drinko Chair in the Department of Religion and Philosophy at Westminster College in New Wilmington\, Pennsylvania. He earned his Ph.D. in Religious Studies from Rice University in Houston\, Texas in 2022. Timothy was also a 2021-2022 Fellow at the McNeil Center for Early American Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. His research focuses on the relationship between environmental phenomena and religious practice. His book American Aurora: Environment and Apocalypse in the Life of Johannes Kelpius (Oxford University Press 2024) explores environmental knowledge and apocalyptic thought in the religion of the early modern mid-Atlantic world. His academic writing has appeared in journals like American Religion\, Journal for the Study of Religion\, Nature\, and Culture\, Correspondences: A Journal of Esotericism\, and Magic\, Ritual\, and Witchcraft.\nRegister here to attend in-person at the Valley Green Inn.\nRegister here to attend online on Zoom.\nThank you to our presenting sponsor\, Univest Financial

SUMMARY:Valley Talk - Fingerspan Bridge: A Community Story with Jody Pinto
DESCRIPTION:Photo courtesy of Wayne Cozzolino 1987 for the Association of Public Art\nJoin Friends of the Wissahickon and the iconic Philadelphia artist behind the Wissahickon’s own Fingerspan Bridge\, Jody Pinto\, to close FOW’s spring Valley Talk series. If you’ve walked along the Orange Trail south of Livezey Dam\, you’ve been transported by the wonder of form and function of Fingerspan\, a landmark structure in the park since 1987 which was commissioned by the Association for Public Art. Discover its inspiration\, design\, and the passionate community members who collaborated to build and install this steel bridge.\nJody Pinto lives and works in New York City\, but she was born into a family of Philadelphia artists. After receiving a BFA from Philadelphia College of Art\, she studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Arts (PAFA)\, where she was a critic in its graduate program\, started the first visiting artist program to bring contemporary artists to speak at the school\, and taught for 40 years. In 1983\, Jody was among the recipients of the Thomas Hazlett Memorial Awards for Excellence in the Arts in Pennsylvania. In the years since Fingerspan’s installation in 1987\, Jody has made public works in Japan\, Israel\, and across the United States. Her work is represented in many collections\, including PAFA\, the Philadelphia Museum of Art\, the Locks Gallery\, Woodmere\, the Guggenheim Museum\, the Whitney Museum of American Art\, the Museum of Modern Art\, and the National Gallery of Art. Today\, Jody\, 83\, is working on an upcoming museum show. She recently completed a video archive project with the Smithsonian.\nThis lecture is generously sponsored by Doug Schaller and David Barquist.\nRegister to attend in person at the Valley Green Inn\nRegister to attend virtually on Zoom
