SUMMARY:Three Different Types of Mark Making- Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit showcases three mediums to highlight the overshadowed aspects of society. Whether it comes from personal experiences or a general fascination\, Sean Christopher\, Dominique Samarco\, and David Herman Jr. use their artist tools to expose the most vulnerable within our communities that tend to be ignored. Three Different Types of Mark Making hopes to open honest conversations\, encourage self reflection\, and make you look at things in a way you may not have to in day-to-day life. \nSean Christopher’s Statement: \nBlack Bodies uses watercolor to explore identity\, visibility\, and freedom. The medium reflects vulnerability and strength through its fluidity and transparency. Black Bodies celebrates and honors the emotional and historical weight the body carries. This series welcomes a space for dialogue\, reflection\, and healing\, transforming personal experience into collective understanding. \nDominique Samarco’s Statement: \nDreams project utopian futures. As educators\, we hold the responsibility to inspire students. I use Philadelphia to map out profound love alongside systemic instability. Through currere\, I retrace my working-class roots to analyze larger issues\, translating memory and emotion into a visual language that examines who I was\, am\, and am becoming. \nDavid Herman Jr.’s Statement: \nPhotography studies fields of attention. I investigate how perception emerges through color\, form\, materiality\, and the built environment. I seek to understand how bodies know themselves in relation to the world. What is often encountered as everyday background continually shapes movement\, feeling\, orientation\, and meaning. I explore how the world continually participates in the formation of perception and experience. \nJoin the opening of Three Different Types of Mark Making to see three artists’ interpretations of art. The opening will be on August 21st\, 6:00 PM- 8:00 PM and held in the Kiosk Gallery at Utility Works (32 E Baltimore Ave\, Lansdowne\, PA 19050). See you then! \nAbout the Gallery\nThis exhibition is organized by the Lansdowne Art Committee\, a volunteer group of The Lansdowne Economic Development Corporation. The mission of the Lansdowne Arts Committee is to create\, foster\, and promote Lansdowne’s identity as a vibrant and inspiring artistic community. The Lansdowne Art Committee is dedicated to nurturing creative expression\, enhancing community engagement\, stimulating economic growth\, preserving and celebrating Lansdowne’s diversity\, and cultivating arts education and access. \nThe Kiosk Gallery is located in the front Lobby of Utility Works\, a creative co-working space in Lansdowne PA*. Originally home to Delaware County Electric and built in the early 20th century\, Utility Works* has been transformed into a creative co-working building that houses 23 art studios\, a ceramics studio as well as a Maker Space. \nParking: There is a municipal lot behind Dunkin’ Donuts that is available to the public\, as well as additional street parking along Baltimore Ave and Highland Ave. \nGallery Accessibility \nInclusive Design: Our first floor is designed to be inclusive and ensure accessibility for all. \nApproachable Entrance: Our front door on Baltimore Ave. (look for the gold doors) is an accessible entrance. Please ask a member of staff if you need both doors open to gain entry. \nAccessible Restroom: We offer an accessible ADA-approved gender-neutral bathroom for the convenience of all visitors. \nWide Walkways: Our walkways are wide enough to accommodate wheelchair users\, ensuring smooth and easy navigation. \nAbout the Venue: \nUtility Works is a 7\,500 sq. ft. art studio building located at 32 East Baltimore Ave. in Lansdowne\, PA. Our Space is home to 23 artist studios\, a hot-desk co-working area\, a MakerSpace classroom\, a ceramic studio\, an art gallery\, and a juice bar. \nUtility Works is operated by the LEDC (Lansdowne Economic Development Corporation)\, a 501(c)(3) dedicated to fostering a human-centered ecosystem by supporting small businesses\, including brick-and-mortar stores\, entrepreneurs\, artists\, and makers.
