The door is unmarked\, and there is a black wedge ramp at the entrance.\nThe area is partly shady with ample tree coverage and open canopy areas.\nParking: Parking is available along the paved roads throughout the cemetery and near the Meadow.\nPublic Transportation: The Woodlands is directly across the street from the 40th Street Trolley Portal serving the T2\, T3\, T4\, T5 trolleys and Route 30 bus.\nWeather: If it is actively raining or snowing\, we will postpone or cancel the event. Community science data collected through iNaturalist observations is key to help monitor urban biodiversity health. \nWhether you’re a seasoned naturalist or a curious beginner\, all are welcome to participate in this accessible\, engaging\, educational experience. Spaces are limited so RSVP to learn more about the urban wildlife in your neighborhood! \nPlease note: The BioBlitz will coincide with the West Philly Craft Fest\, so parking won’t be available on-site. DESCRIPTION:Volunteer at The Woodlands\nWe’re taking the opportunity to give the grounds a much-needed winter spruce-up. Join us on Saturday\, January 25th for a volunteer clean-up session\, and read on for what you can do at The Woodlands to keep the grounds beautiful\, whenever you may be visiting. \nWhat we’ll be doing: Collecting fallen sticks and branches\, picking up trash along Woodland Avenue\, and doing other outdoor site clean-up chores as needed. Volunteers should plan to bend and lift throughout the day. \nWhere we’ll meet: The day will start at the Stable at 10AM. \nWhat you’ll need: Not required\, but feel free to bring your favorite pair of hand pruners if you have them. BYO work gloves and water. \nWhat The Woodlands will provide: Larger tools\, guidance\, and a full to-do list. \nRather work on your own schedule? Here are jobs you can do on your own throughout the week: \n\n\nPick up trash and deposit it in our dumpster (located in the carriage yard\, next to the stable) \n\n\nPick up sticks from throughout the cemetery and pile them along the curb to be chipped. \n\n\nSign up to be a Volunteer and receive our Volunteer updates. \n\n\nThis event will be canceled in the event of inclement weather. DESCRIPTION:Through discussion and producing fruit leather from salvaged fallen apples\, this workshop ruminates on apples in mythical\, cultural\, and\n\n\nPomological: Poison Apples and Fallen Fruit presented by Biomaterials Working Group in partnership with The Philadelphia Orchard Project \n \nWe are eating apples in the end of times. Through discussion and production of fruit leather from salvaged fallen apples\, this workshop ruminates on apples in mythical\, cultural\, and biological contexts. Apple leather is presented in simultaneous processing stages: cooking\, dehydrating\, and as a bioplastic material within art practices. \nThis workshop explores apples as symbols of knowledge\, tickets to (un)paradise\, fairy tale poisons and folk remedies\, and sci-fi symbionts\, grafted from clones. This seemingly simple\, homely fruit unfolds into complex layers – how do we parse inherited stories around sustenance\, medicine\, and colonial forestry? Through food preservation\, what future are we planning? \nThis event is free and open to the public\, registration is highly encouraged as space is limited. Accessibility information for the POP Learning Orchard will be updated shortly! \nAbout The Biomaterials Working Group \nThe Biomaterials Working Group (BWG)\, is an arts research collective based in the part of Lenapehoking called Philadelphia. BWG members include Marcellus Armstrong\, Jazmyn Crosby\, Theo Loftis\, Cecilia McKinnon\, and Elizabeth Shores. As artists\, educators\, and researchers\, we share an interest in exploring sustainable alternatives to plastics and toxic materials conventionally used in studio art practices\, as well as a broad curiosity about the transformative potential of everyday materials used in unconventional ways. Community science data collected through iNaturalist observations is key to help monitor urban biodiversity health. \nWhat is a BioBlitz? \nDuring a set period of time at a set location\, participants focus on finding and identifying as many species as they can. \nHow do I participate? \nPlease download* the app iNaturalist (it’s free!) to your smart phone\, create an account\, and learn the basics of how to upload an observation. iNaturalist is an app that allows everyone no matter their skill level to find and identify species they come across\, from an unknown plant to a cool bird!\n*Please note if you do not have a smart phone\, we can group up and take turns! \nWhy should I join? \nFirst\, it’s FUN!
