SUMMARY:Wildlife Clinic Volunteer Training
DESCRIPTION:As the only licensed wildlife rehabilitation clinic in the city of Philadelphia\, the Wildlife Clinic at the Schuylkill Center takes in thousands of sick\, injured\, and orphaned animals each year. Our small team of clinic staff relies on the support of dedicated Wildlife Clinic volunteers to care for native small mammals\, birds\, raptors\, reptiles\, and amphibians. Start on your path to become one of our dedicated Wildlife Clinic volunteers in 2025 at one of our five available training sessions!\nVolunteer Training Requirements\nBefore starting work in the clinic\, volunteers must attend a training session\, submit a volunteer waiver and application\, and complete online ethics/safety courses. Clinic support volunteers must be at least 16 years old and work two 4-hour shifts per month. Animal care volunteers have to be at least 18 years old and commit to a weekly 4-hour shift. Further requirements and expectations can be found on our volunteer page and will be covered during the volunteer training sessions.\nAvailable Training Sessions\nIn-person training sessions will be held on February 8\, February 24\, and March 1. Virtual training sessions will be held on February 10 and February 22. Registration is required. SUMMARY:Toad Detour Training
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to protect our toads!\nToad Detour protects the local toad population as they migrate to and from their breeding grounds each spring. When the toads emerge from brumation (the reptile version of hibernation) in the early spring\, hundreds of them cross Port Royal\, Hagy’s Mill and other nearby roads to mate in the Roxborough Reservoir or the Schuylkill Center’s ponds. Toad Detour season runs from March 1st to June 30th. On select nights\, when the conditions are just right\, Toad Detour volunteers erect barricades and help divert traffic during busy toad crossing evenings\, saving hundreds of toads.\nThis family-friendly Toad Detour volunteer training session will be hosted at the Visitor Center\, from 1-3pm on Saturday\, February 8th. Walk-ins welcome!\nSign Up\nAbout Winterbloom\nOn view from February 1 – March 29\, 2025\, Winterbloom is a solo gallery exhibition by Claire Downes Whitehurst at the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education. During a time of winter dormancy and hibernation in the forest\, this exhibition presents colorful\, visionary abstractions drawn from Whitehurst’s attunement to forms and patterns found in nature.\nWinterbloom is curated by Heather Moqtaderi\, Interim Director of Environmental Art. The exhibition opens with an Artist Reception and Gallery Talk on Saturday February 1\, 2025 from 1pm-3pm. Claire Downes Whitehurst will give an Artist Workshop on Saturday\, March 1 from 1pm-3pm.\nLearn more about Winterbloom\nAbout the Artist:\nClaire Whitehurst is a painter\, printmaker and sculptor. She received her BFA from the University of Mississippi\, and her MFA in Painting from the University of Iowa. She draws from the landscape and atmosphere of the deep South\, exploring queer space\, religious iconography and architecture through form\, color\, and composition. Her work plays with the relationship between image and object.\nIn 2018\, she was the recipient of the Stanley Fellowship for International Research at the University of Iowa. She worked in the Dordogne region of southern France where she studied polychromatic cave paintings and engravings. Her research focused on the relationship between surface and image\, and the compositional complexities of abstract narrative.\nShe has exhibited nationally and internationally\, and a book of her drawings and poetry was published in 2021 through Drum Machine Editions in Asheville\, North Carolina. Her work has been featured in numerous publications including New American Paintings\, Oxford American\, ArtMaze Magazine\, and the Graphite Journal in collaboration with the Hammer Museum along with many others.

DESCRIPTION:January is great time of year for bird watching here at the Schuylkill Center. On January 11 we’re inviting birders to help us collect data for our annual Winter Bird Census! Help monitor the abundance of bird species that winter in our forests and fields. All of the information we collect will be shared with other citizen scientists\, helping us to better understand how our local bird populations change over time.\nDrinks and food will be provided for participants.
