SUMMARY:Discovery Day - Rock Climbing\, Sustainability & more
DESCRIPTION:Discovery Days are monthly events at the Discovery Center that are free and open to the public. These events are co-hosted by Philadelphia Outward Bound School (POBS) and Audubon Mid-Atlantic (AMA). Each month provides opportunities for community members to experience different adventures and activities related to the outdoors. Come visit! \nIn March\, POBS will be offering free rock climbing at our indoor rock wall. The activity is suitable for participants of any experience level\, including beginners\, ages 8 and up. POBS will provide equipment and instruction. Four climbing sessions will be offered over the course of the day on a first come\, first serve basis. Participants must fill out a risk and liability waiver in order to participate. Children and youth must be accompanied by an adult age 18 or older. \nAudubon Mid-Atlantic will be hosting an Environmental Resource Fair from 11-3pm\, and the launch of our Resource Library from 2-3:30pm! \nCheck out the resource fair near the Parking Lot (or in the great hall if it rains) and receive resources from organizations that are building sustainable\, healthy communities and ecosystems. Come to Audubon’s table around 1:30pm to listen about our sustainability work! We are also partnering with Energy Coordinating Agency who will provide a PGW Conservation Workshop with DIY kits from 11:30-1pm. Click the link to sign up! \nWalk up the trail to our Lobby to celebrate the launch of our brand new Resource Library! It will have books for people of all ages\, covering the topics of environmental justice\, birds\, and general nature. This event will include giveaways and light refreshments. Click the link to register. \nThe Discovery Center Team is hosting a Volunteer Work Day from 10-1pm! We will work to remove and replace our reservoir fence! Built when the Strawberry Mansion Reservoir was decommissioned in the 1970s\, this chain-link fence will now be replaced with a less obtrusive cable fence. Volunteers will be helping to cut\, remove\, and dispose of sections of fencing\, and then installing the new low visibility cables. Brief orientation sessions will take place at the top of the hour from 10 am-1 pm. Please wear work shoes or boots and long sleeves. Gloves and safety equipment will be provided. Click the link to sign up!

SUMMARY:Climate Anxiety Dance Party
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to the first ever CLIMATE ANXIETY DANCE PARTY\, where you are welcome to thrash and groove in all sorts of socially unacceptable ways. The International Panel on Climate Change has told us that we need to hit peak emissions by the year 2025. That’s this year!! Wait\, it gets better. We have 5 years left until we need to halve emissions from 2019 levels. Do these facts give you feelings?! Take a moment to notice that emotion contains the word motion. We are moved by our emotions and can also move and transform them by moving our bodies. It’s true! Stress has tangible effects. We can get stuck in a flight or fight mode. Engaging our bodies activates the parasympathetic nervous system\, allows us to complete the stress response\, and unclench the energy we need to move the world. CLIMATE ANXIETY DANCE PARTY is part experimental dance class\, part somatic therapy\, and part ceremony with a backbeat for world transformation. Come dressed comfortably\, come ready to share a messy smorgasbord of feelings\, and come ready to shake it all loose. \n\n\nLOCATION\nDiscovery Center\,

These baskets can be crafted from foraged pine needles. The art of weaving them has been carried by indigenous people for millennia\, passed down from one generation to the next. Weaving is not just a practical activity\, but an active meditation that imparts good medicine to the spirt\, and is a wonderful way to pass the time through the dark winter months. Tickets include the cost of materials which will be provided. SUMMARY:Birding Under the Influence: Cycling Across America in Search of Birds and Recovery
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a riveting evening with Dorian Anderson to learn about his exciting yearlong adventure as he took a two-wheeled eco-friendly twist on the Big Year project\, where a birdwatcher tries to observe as many species as possible during a calendar year. He ultimately survived subzero temperatures\, drifting snow\, gusting winds\, lightning storms\, mountainous ascents\, dog attacks\, crumbling roads\, and several accidents. By the end of his travels\, he had spotted 618 bird species across 18\,000 miles of biking! \nAnderson will speak about the genesis of his bike-birding project\, provide a thrilling recount of his travels\, highlight the birds he saw\, and reveal how his adventure changed his life. His personality and enthusiasm are infectious\, and his tales of birding\, cycling\, and self-discovery will inspire others to venture into the outdoors\, take note of the birds around them\, and make positive changes in their own lives.
