Nuria Schettino González \nIn 1856\, at a Mexican rancho in Los Angeles\, a Tongva woman fights for her land and daughter when the ranchero’s wife leaves to defend her own land grant. \nEl Tren y la Península\n(2023\, 88 min)\, a documentary feature by dirs. Sky Richards and Andreas Kruger Foncerrada \nThe Train and the Peninsula is an intimate portrait of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula as the controversial railroad megaproject known as the “Maya Train” is being built. A cinematic journey along the projected route of the train takes us on an immersive and epic journey across the peninsula. Through the fascinating stories and reflections of its inhabitants\, the documentary exposes the environmental and social consequences of the development model imposed in the region. The directors weave together a collective narrative through the incisive and transparent testimonies of the peninsula’s inhabitants and reveal a human landscape full of vitality and Mayan wisdom that exposes the clash between different ways of imagining progress.

The result is a deeply immersive film that transports audiences to a rarely seen place and urges us all to look more closely at the hidden interconnections of the natural world. \nQ&A with Samhita Sunya\, director of Conference of the Moths and Academy Entomologist Greg Cowper\, moderated by Arzhang Zafar\, PAAFF’s Festival & Programming Director

SUMMARY:The Potential for Mycofiltration of E. coli Pollution in The Crum Creek
DESCRIPTION:The Potential for Mycofiltration of E. coli Pollution in The Crum Creek Using T. versicolor and P. ostreatus \nThe Philadelphia Mycology Club  welcomes you to join us in our fifth installation of bimonthly meetings at the Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences! We are excited to have a regular meeting space to work on some more in-depth community science projects and to welcome academic and professional mycologists to speak to our community about their work. \nEvent Description: \nMycoremediation is a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional wastewater and drinking water treatment\, as well as other environmental remediation methods. This project will design a mycofiltration system using mushroom species Trametes versicolor and Pleurotus ostreatus. Water from a section of the Crum Creek\, located in Swarthmore\, Pennsylvania\, U.S.A\, will be sampled and filtered through this system to remove Escherichia coli (E. coli). The mycofiltered water will be compared to the Environmental Protection Agency standards for E. coli concentrations in recreational and drinking water to measure how effective T. versicolor or P. ostreatus may be at removing E. coli present in freshwater drinking sources. \nRegistration is limited. Please register in advance and cancel your tickets if you find you can no longer attend this event. \nEnter the Academy of Natural Sciences through the 19th Street entrance. If arriving late\, please ask to be directed to the BEES classroom. \n**This event is free and open to everyone. The PMC is funded entirely through donations. If you are able\, please consider giving an amount of your choice at checkout** \nBy registering for this event you grant the Philadelphia Mycology Club to use photographs and/or video of you taken at the event in publications\, online\, and in other communications related to the Philadelphia Mycology Club.

SUMMARY:Conscious Fashion: Weaving a Sustainable Future
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, January 30\, 2025 \n6:00 PM-8:00 PM \nOn Thursday\, January 30\, join us for a Town Square discussion on clothing and where it comes from. \nA cozy sweater to match your jeans\, a new scarf to go with your coat\, a few stylish shirts for the gym and maybe those cute yoga pants — shopping for clothes is fun\, and depending on your tastes\, affordable. But there are bigger costs than the price tag you see at the store. Every item in your closet has gone through many steps in a complex production process\, from harvesting fibers\, dyeing\, and sewing to shipping and sales. And each step for these garments has major environmental consequences. \nWHYY’s Maiken Scott will chat about sustainable fashion with Heidi Barr\, co-founder and CEO of PA Flax Project; Rachel Higgins\, co-founder of PA Fibershed and instructor at Drexel University in the fashion industry and merchandising program; and Kimberly McGlonn\, designer\, CEO of NOOR by Grant Blvd and author. They will talk about their work in the fashion industry and address the challenges we face together in building a local\, more sustainable supply chain. \nRegister for Conscious Fashion: Weaving a Sustainable Future \nThis event is a part of the Academy Town Square Series. Learn more.

SUMMARY:Black Excellence In Birding
DESCRIPTION:Join the Academy of Natural Sciences for Black Excellence in Birding: An Evening With Christian Cooper\, the culminating event of Black Birders Week 2024! At this annual black-tie gala\, and fledgling sneaker ball\, meet science writer and editor Christian Cooper\, hear stories of his experiences as a birdwatcher and author\, and find out how the Central Park Birdwatching incident of 2020 changed the landscape for Black birders throughout the country. Find your Flock as we spotlight members of local birdwatching groups\,  explore specimens from our world-class Ornithology Collection and traipse through the rainforest in the Under the Canopy exhibit. Fluff up your plumage for a feathery date night or get your flyest sneakers (see what we did there) and pair them with fancy threads to show out that evening at what is becoming Philadelphia’s newest sneaker ball. Simply sip cocktails and savor delicious appetizers as you enjoy good conversation with fellow Black birders.
