SUMMARY:Screening: "You Don't Have to Go Home\, But..." by Aidan Un
DESCRIPTION:You Don’t Have to Go Home\, But . . .by Aidan Un (USA\, 2024\, 78 min) is an ode to dancing bodies\, a grimy love letter to Philly\, a story about what to do when the DJ has played the last song\, the club’s lights come on\, and you gotta go . . . somewhere. Following dancers at different stages of their artistic lives\, with legendary party Second Sundae as backdrop\, this film examines the possibility of spiritual fulfillment in a socioeconomic configuration that ultimately doesn’t value the practices that make us free. \nThe evening will also feature the next generation of storytellers\, opening with “Hop Hop Life”\, produced through Scribe’s Documentary History Project for Youth (DHPY). The event will also feature appearances by Second Sundae dancers who helped shape the scene\, joining Un for a post-screening discussion about the community\, history\, and influence of hip-hop culture.

SUMMARY:Producers' Forum: Andrea Weiss and Greta Schiller
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a screening of The Five Demands with Andrea Weiss and Greta Schiller.\n\n\nThe Five Demands By Andrea Weiss and Greta Schiller (USA\, 2023\, 74 minutes) \nIn April 1969\, a small group of Black and Puerto Rican students shut down the City College of New York\, an elite public university located right in the heart of Harlem. Through archival footage and present-day interviews\, The Five Demands is the riveting story of a student strike fueled by the revolutionary fervor sweeping the United States at the time. Since 1984\, she has produced over a dozen films\, unearthing lost histories of marginalized groups and writing them into the cultural narrative. \nAndrea Weiss (Producer/Director) is an Emmy Award-winning documentary filmmaker and founder\, with Greta Schiller\, of Jezebel Productions. Most recently\, she is Producer/Director/Editor of Bones of Contention\, a feature documentary delving into the historical memory movement in Spain and the unknown story of LGBT repression under the Franco dictatorship. She holds a Ph.D. in U.S. History and is Professor of Film at the City College of New York\, where she co-directs the MFA Program in Film.

SUMMARY:A Queer Black Body: Thomas Allen Harris
DESCRIPTION:Filmmaker and multi-disciplinary artist Thomas Allen Harris’ body of work is being honored at the Scribe Video Center.\n\n\nSince the mid-1980s\, multidisciplinary artist and filmmaker\, Thomas Allen Harris Jr (Tahj)\, has used a wide range of media including video\, photography\, installations\, film\, and performance to examine the nuances of Black and queer identity and subjectivity\, particularly within the construction of the diaspora and the family model. \nHarris has been developing a co-creative and socially engaged practice that re-interprets identity\, autobiography\, and representation in the digital archive. For over three decades\, by interweaving personal biographical material\, Harris illuminates the notion of family through the Black queer gaze and pushes the boundaries of documentary filmmaking by creating internal and external dialogues that champion self-actualization and transcend artificial boundaries. \nIn this week-long celebration of Tahj’s body of work\, a series of videotapes derived from the artist’s archive from the 1990s\, his first feature documentary film Vintage: Families of Value\, as well as the PBS broadcast documentary series Family Pictures USA will all be screened at Scribe Video Center. \nThrough a pop-up archival exhibition\, A Return: Reflections\, Place & Diaspora\, curated by Darah Gaines Martin\, we visit Brazil as well as various US cities during the 1990s\, diving into various themes of family\, spirituality\, and self. We find ourselves in conversation with critically acclaimed poet and activist Essex Hemphill and transported back to moments of pre-adolescence\, grappling with the concepts of intersectional identities. In these six pieces\, Harris uniquely examines diasporic culture\, as well as the human condition and Black and queer identity\, through the preservation of the present moment\, including candid discussion and performance art. In Vintage: Families of Value\, Thomas captures three Black families through the eyes of gay and lesbian siblings including Harris and his brother Lyle Ashton Harris. The film examines the family model around themes of sexuality and identity. In addition to Vintage\, Cass Arrington\, a former student of Tahj and Philadelphia native\, will screen their short film\, The World Before Me\, about multi-generational experiences of growing up queer across two generations of family history. \nThrough this showcase\, we pay homage to the dynamic benevolence that is Black and queer identity. Each piece selected for viewing encompasses the multiple dimensions of Tahj’s artistic practice through the exploration of togetherness and individuality. “A Queer Black Body” honors influences across the diaspora as well as cultural spaces\, leaders and artists that have\, in some way shape or form\, led us to come together presently at The Scribe Video Center in Philadelphia. \nTahj’s video archive will be open to the public starting Monday\, February 17th until February 24th. All attendees will be given the option to engage with the material through written and/or visual response modules for the course of the exhibition. The two night screening will happen on Thursday\, February 20th and Friday\, February 21st at 7pm. \nThe Films \nThursday\, February 20th at 7:00pm \nThe World Before Me \n(2022\, 6 min) \nThis essay film follows Cass Arrington’s journey to explore the experiences of growing up queer across multiple generations of shared family history\, through reconnecting with a distant aunt from North Philadelphia. \nVintage: Families of Value \n(1995\, 71 min) \nDirector Thomas Allen Harris’ Vintage: Families of Value is a thoughtful examination of three Black families through the eyes of gay and lesbian siblings including Harris and his brother Lyle Ashton Harris. This lyrical and impressionistic film blends dramatic re-creations\, verité footage\, performance\, audiovisual collage\, and archival photos and films to sketch a provocative tableau of three modern Black families negotiating sexuality and identity. \nThomas Allen Harris is a critically acclaimed\, interdisciplinary artist\, filmmaker\, and scholar whose work explores family\, identity\, and spirituality. \nDarah Gaines Martin (she/they) is an NYC-based filmmaker and producer. Graduating from Delaware State University with a B.A. in Public Relations and Advertising\, Darah’s work across film and video centers joy\, exploration\, and self actualization. Currently\, Darah works as an associate producer on Thomas Allen Harris’ upcoming feature documentary film My Mom\, The Scientist. \nCassidy Arrington is a 23 year old nonbinary multi-media artist based in and from Philadelphia\, Pennsylvania with a BA in Ethnicity\, Race\, & Migration Studies from Yale College. In 2024\, Arrington became a resident artist at the TILT Institute for the Contemporary Image and the Painted Bride Art Center. \nDirector Thomas Allen Harris\, is expected to be joined by Cass Arrington\, Darah Gaines Martin\, Donald Perry for post-screening discussions on Thursday and Friday. Conversations will be moderated by special guest programmer Denise A. Greene.

SUMMARY:Producers Forum: DeeDee Halleck
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the screening of “Bitter Cane” followed by a post screening discussion with DeeDee Halleck.\n\n\nAn award-winning documentary about the colonial exploitation of the Haitian people\, Bitter Cane was filmed secretly by a collective of Haitian and American filmmakers—many part of the Mouvement Haitien de Libération\, an underground revolutionary organization—during the dictatorship of Jean-Claude (“Baby Doc”) Duvalier. The film’s deep insights into the exploitation and foreign domination of the Haitian people remain all too relevant today. \n \nAfter BITTER CANE was filmed in Haiti – clandestinely during the regime of Jean-Claude Duvalier – the director was identified as “Jacques Arcelin.” That was a fictitious name used to protect the identify of the filmmakers. Now we can finally reveal their real names. The film was co-directed by Haitian activist Ben Dupuy and his American comrade Kim Ives. They were part of a collective of Haitian and American filmmakers called Haiti Film. \n \nDeeDee Halleck began making films in the 1960s. Her film\, The Mural on Our Street was nominated for an Academy Award in 1965\, and she went on to work with artists Shirley Clarke\, Richard Serra\, Nancy Holt\, Robert Frank\, Jean Dupuy\, and others. She was president of American Independent Video and Film Makers (AIVF) 1977-1982\, organizing a campaign to create funding and space for independent producers on public television. Since 1974 she has been the film and video chronicler of the Bread and Puppet theater. In 1982-4 she was raised funds from The Corporation on Public Television to make a film on Haiti\, working as a member of Haiti Films\, along with Kim Ives\, Kyle Kibbe and Pennee Bender. The film went on to win prizes at TIFF (Toronto) and Cannes and was shown clandestinely in Haiti. \n \nDeeDee Halleck will be there in-person for the post screening discussion.

SUMMARY:Producers Forum: Irit Reinheimer
DESCRIPTION:Scribe Video Center and Jewish Currents present a 20th-anniversary screening of Young Jewish And Left\n\n\nTwenty years ago\, Michael Chameides and Irit Reinheimer traveled across the U.S. and interviewed over 50 Jews who identify as anarchists\, leftists\, radicals\, communists\, or socialists. They were looking for a Jewish culture that coincided with their values. Scribe Video Center and Jewish Currents present a 20th-anniversary screening of Young Jewish And Left\, a 55-minute documentary that weaves interviews and experimental filmmaking to build a conversation about queer culture\, Jewish Arab history\, secular Yiddishkeit\, anti-racist analysis\, and religious/spiritual traditions into a multi-layered portrait of Leftist Jewish politics in 2003. \nWe revisit Young Jewish And Left with co-director Irit Reinheimer and two of its subjects\, Ezra Berkley Nepon and Nava EtShalom. We look at the political and cultural moment in which it was made\, what has shifted since its creation\, and how this documentary holds particular important resonances in the present moment. The conversation will be moderated by Sol Brager\, Director of Community Engagement at Jewish Currents. \nFounded in 1946\, Jewish Currents is a magazine committed to the rich tradition of thought\, activism\, and culture on the Jewish left and the left more broadly. \nThe event is co-sponsored by Jewish Voice for Peace Philly and the Leeway Foundation. \nMasks are requested to be worn except when eating or drinking and will be supplied at the door. \n“Young Jewish and Left provides a beautiful cross-section of today’s visionary thinkers\, activists\, and artists. The film celebrates the profound legacy of resistance among Jews – and criticizes the reactionary elements in Jewish communities\, from the occupation to assimilation\, patriarchy\, and homophobia. And it calls the Left to task for generally lacking an understanding of Jewish history or culture.” \n—Dan Berger\, Left Turn Magazine\, 2006 \n \n \nBios: \n \nIrit Reinheimer is a filmmaker and writer based in Philadelphia. Her writing is influenced by her background in experimental filmmaking\, where she has taken a sculptural approach to examining themes of loss and inheritance through short films constructed from her late father’s 8mm home movies\, archival materials\, and new footage. Irit’s films Young\, Jewish and Left\, How the Bridge Works\, I Told Her This Was Home\, and Of Origin have screened nationally and internationally. Her first book\, Push the Water\, was published by Thread Makes Blanket Press (2023). She is also a long-time member of Jewish Voice for Peace. \nEzra Berkley Nepon is the author of two books which document and analyze people’s history: Justice\, Justice Shall You Pursue: A History of New Jewish Agenda (2012) which tells the story of a multi-issue\, progressive Jewish organization which was active with over 45 chapters across the US in the 1980s\, and Dazzle Camouflage: Spectacular Theatrical Strategies for Resistance and Resilience (2016) which looks at two examples of contemporary theater artists\, generating analysis about their shared transformative theatrical strategies. \nBased in Philadelphia\, Ezra is Deputy Director of the Global Philanthropy Project\, a network of funders and philanthropic advisors working to expand global philanthropic support to advance the human rights of LGBTI people in the Global South and East. Ezra is a member of Jewish Voice for Peace\, a longtime member of the JVP Philly Steering Committee\, and was a founding member of the JVP Artist Council. \nNava EtShalom is a poet\, editor\, and educator in West Philly.
