SUMMARY:Wild Materials: Transforming Found Objects into Art – rescheduled
DESCRIPTION:Please note: this event has been rescheduled for Saturday\, May 23\, 1:00 – 4:00 PM. \nSticks\, stones\, shells\, seeds\, feathers\, bark\, river glass\, found objects\, fibers\, paint…  \nUsing a playful mix of natural materials and unexpected treasures\, we’ll come together to create art. A selection of recycled wooden cigar boxes will be provided for you to choose from and transform. You don’t need to bring anything—however\, you’re welcome to bring small personal objects if you’d like to incorporate them into your piece.  \nEach participant will select a cigar box that will become the stage for imagination and playful making. Our instructor\, Lauren J. Silver\, will open the workshop with a brief introduction to her found-object artmaking practice. Together\, we’ll discuss our intentions for the workshop\, then settle into plenty of time to relax\, experiment\, have fun\, and create side by side.  \nThis workshop is beginner-friendly\, and no prior art or assemblage experience is needed—just curiosity and a willingness to explore.  \nPlease note: we uphold “Leave No Trace” practices at our preserves\, meaning we take only memories with us. This policy will remain in place during the workshop. We encourage participants to bring found objects from home\, as no materials will be collected from the preserve during the event.  \nAbout the instructor: Lauren J. Silver is a Philadelphia-based\, mixed-medium artist and critical childhood studies educator. Her art draws upon found and reclaimed objects and assemblage approaches using fragments\, fibers\, scraps\, gifts from nature\, and discarded objects—mending them into something beautiful and whole. Lauren has been showing her art since 2022 across the Philadelphia region.

DESCRIPTION:Natural Lands is excited to be part of the 2024 City Nature Challenge. This community initiative encourages everyone to connect with nature using iNaturalist. The Challenge is free\, easy\, and open to all. Simply look for nature (it’s everywhere!)\, take photos noting the location\, and submit observations to iNaturalist.org. The smartphone or desktop app is free to download. Don’t worry if you don’t know the name of the plant or animal species you photograph; iNaturalist suggests identifications and peer reviewers double-check sightings.  \nPhiladelphia City Nature Challenge runs Friday\, April 26\, through Monday\, April 29\, 2024\, in Philadelphia\, Bucks\, Delaware\, and Montgomery Counties in PA\, as well as Burlington\, Camden\, and Gloucester Counties in NJ.  \nExplore your local patch anytime during the four-day window or join Natural Lands on Friday\, April 26\, at Saunders Woods Preserve and we will introduce you to the iNaturalist app and practice observation skills\, and then explore the forests and meadows capturing photos and uploading them to the app for identification.

Join instructor Aimée Alegria Barry as she leads you through some relaxing\, easy steps of tai chi walking to bring together mind and body. She’ll also teach several slow-moving qigong stretches to help deepen your breathing and focus. We hope you’ll leave Saunders Woods feeling calm and centered\, ready for the rest of your day.  \nAbout the instructor: \nAimee Alegria Barry from Centaur Tai Chi began studying Yang style tai chi and chi qigong more than 30 years ago. She also holds a black belt in tae kwon do.
