DESCRIPTION:Learn how to make compost through a six-step process that begins with transforming recycled food waste into nutrient-rich soil. This demonstration highlights the current depletion of the city’s soil and shows how composting can restore its vitality—producing dark\, fertile earth capable of growing nutritious fruits and vegetables that support optimal health. \nThe Philadelphia Farm Service Agency(FSA) will also be tabling during the event to share USDA resources for urban growers. County Executive Director Nina Berryman will speak to participants about the FSA and answer any questions. She can discuss farm numbers\, youth loans\, and other financial safety net programs the FSA has to offer. \nLed by Nefertari Muhammad (beginner-level workshop).

DESCRIPTION:Bartram’s Garden will serve as the signature event site for National Public Lands Day (NPLD) 2025\, a nationwide celebration of the places that connect us all. NPLD signature sites are selected because they embody the annual theme; this year’s theme\, “Our Home Outdoors”\, reminds us that public lands are more than just scenic spaces– they are where we gather\, grow\, and feel at home. This event is in partnership with the National Environmental Education Foundation\, the nonprofit coordinator of National Public Lands Day for more than 30 years. \nJoin us at Sankofa Community Farm in the morning for hands-on activities and community connection. Volunteers will work alongside Farm staff on projects\, including seasonal plantings\, harvesting\, weeding\, invasive species removal\, and orchard support. No experience is necessary.  Attendees will also have the chance to enter a raffle for a chance to win a pair of TEVAs. \nVolunteers will meet at the Sankofa Community Farm at 9:30 AM and be separated into groups and provided with instructions and safety protocols for the day. DESCRIPTION:We will learn how to infuse herbs from the garden to create a more expansive selection of products to cook with! Simple syrups\, infused oils\, honey\, brines\, and broths. Come learn new ways to enjoy and preserve your herbs! \nThis workshop will be hosted behind the education center at Sankofa Community Farm and facilitated by Tisha Golafaie. \n

SUMMARY:Sankofa Community Farm Volunteer Day
DESCRIPTION:Volunteers will work alongside Farm staff to support seasonal plantings\, harvesting\, weeding\, invasive species removal\, and orchard support. \nVolunteers will meet at the Sankofa Community Farm at 9:30 AM and be separated into groups and provided with instructions and safety protocols for the day. Out of respect and safety for our staff and others\, please arrive on time. \nPLEASE NOTE: Each adult must register individually in order to complete the waiver. Parents/guardians must complete registration for individuals 18 and under. \nRegistration full but would like to still participate? Please contact Kimani Keaton at kimani@bartramsgarden.org to be added to our waitlist. \nPlease also email Kimani immediately if you plan on cancelling your attendance\, so that we may make room for those on our waitlist. \nThank you! \nHealth reminders: We are in accordance with Pennsylvania and the City of Philadelphia’s current COVID-19 response levels.
