SUMMARY:Spring Adopt-a-Tree Treeplanting!
DESCRIPTION:Join us with your family and friends to adopt and plant trees at Riverbend.\nSpring is a wonderful time to plant trees\, just as the preserve is coming back to life. Planting trees helps combat climate change and maintain our local water supply\, as trees keep excess stormwater runoff from heading to the Schuylkill River watershed. \nSpend the morning with us at Riverbend enjoying: \n-Planting trees and learning about the trees that call Riverbend home \n-Playing tree-tastic games \n-Filling out an adoption certificate for the tree you planted \n-And participating in the Philadelphia City Nature Challenge BioBlitz! \nRegistration is required\, as spaces are limited. This event is open to all ages. Please bring your own water and work gloves. \nThis is a Riverbend PAY WHAT YOU WISH Event: \nThe true cost to Riverbend to offer this educational event to the public is $35 per family. We recognize that for some families\, this is unaffordable. Therefore\, we invite you to choose the price you wish to pay for this event. In doing so\, you help make environmental education accessible to ALL children\, regardless of their family’s financial situation.

SUMMARY:For The Love Of Bluebirds
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a natural gathering called For The Love Of Bluebirds\, where we celebrate these beautiful creatures with hiking & more!\n\n\nJoin us at the Riverbend Environmental Education Center for an event that celebrates our love for bluebirds! If you’re a fan of these beautiful creatures\, this is the event for you. Come and learn all about bluebirds\, their habitats\, and how you can help protect them. This in-person event will be filled with exciting activities\, informative talks\, and the chance to meet fellow bluebird enthusiasts. \nBluebird numbers were once in decline\, but thanks to the efforts of conservation-minded individuals and organizations their numbers have increased.  Unfortunately\, some Bluebird lovers think they are doing a good deed by simply putting up a nest box in their backyard.  That is not the case and often can do more harm than good.   \nIn this session\, we will cover the following: \n\nBluebirds 101 – What you should know about Bluebirds and other cavity nesters\nCreating the right backyard habitat \nChoosing and setting up your Bluebird house\nUnderstanding and mitigating threats\nVolunteer opportunities\nSpeaker:  Krista Hixon \n\nJoin us for this informative session if you are interested in being a responsible Bluebird ‘landlord’ or just want to learn more about these charismatic and native cavity-nesting birds.  Don’t miss out on this opportunity to connect with nature and show your love for these amazing birds. \nSee you there!

SUMMARY:Secrets of the Solstice: A Winter’s Walk
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Winter Solstice walk that celebrates the season and its many natural symbols. Led by local Naturalist Mike Weilbacher.\n\n\nIn December\, natural symbols celebrating the holidays abound: evergreens\, hollies\, mistletoe\, even branching menorahs and the first fruits of Kwanzaa. What exactly happens at the solstice? And what is the strange and wonderful history of these– and other– symbols? On a guided walk around Riverbend’s preserve\, Mike Weilbacher\, shares the science\, legends\, and traditions of the season from around the world and across time\, from the famous Stonehenge to less-known Native American woodhenges. And at long last\, you’ll finally understand why we kiss under the mistletoe! \nThe walk will last approximately 45 minutes and end at dusk at Riverbend’s campfire circle. We will gather around the fire for hot cocoa to conclude the event. Please bring a reusable cup. \nThis walk is appropriate for all learners and outdoor enthusiasts ages 6 and up. \nLed by local Naturalist\, Writer\, Educator\, Consultant\, Mike Weilbacher. \n\n\nAbout Mike Weilbacher \nWriter-naturalist Mike Weilbacher is an environmental educator with 40 years of experience teaching through lectures\, walks\, newspaper essays\, theatrical performances\, and radio. His first book\, Wild Philly\, has just been released by Timber Press\, and features 29 nature walks you and your family can take in the region\, plus tons of additional information about nature and the environment. \nMike travels the Philadelphia area offering lectures\, walks\, and other programs on nature and the environment\, talking about issues like climate change and protecting monarch butterflies. SUMMARY:Fall Adopt-A-Tree Treeplanting At Riverbend
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fun-filled day with your family to adopt and plant trees at Riverbend.\n\n\nFall is a wonderful time to plant trees just before it turns colder in the winter months. Registration is required as spaces are limited. \nPlease bring your own water and work gloves to the event.
