SUMMARY:Nature at Noon at Rittenhouse Square
DESCRIPTION:Take a break from your desk and reconnect with the natural world — right in the middle of your workday. Join us for Nature at Noon\, a new series of accessible lunchtime nature outings in and around Center City Philadelphia. \nNature at Noon is designed to bring joy\, inclusion and curiosity to your lunch hour. These one-hour outdoor gatherings center accessibility\, biodiversity\, safety and connection — with programming that bridges science\, art and community. Inspired by the work of In Color Birding Club\, Feminist Bird Club\, Philly Queer Birders\, PCAS Adaptive Birders and Disability Pride PA’s Outdoors for Everyone series\, Nature at Noon is for everyone — no experience needed\, just curiosity and a desire to step outside. \nFor this one-hour outing\, we will meet at noon at the Rittenhouse Square entrance located at 19th and Walnut St\, or you can plug this location into your map (39.9501253\, -75.1723100). \nAccess Features:\nSurface/Terrain: The park surface is composed of sidewalk\, brick pathways\, looser brick sections near the center of the square and grassy areas. The area is level with no elevations or slopes.\nPublic Bathroom: As there are no public bathrooms in the park\, it is recommended that you use the bathroom before arrival.\nThe area is shady and offers ample benches.\nParking: 1845 Walnut St. (Philadelphia Parking Lot). Street parking is available.\nPublic Transportation: Bus Routes 9\, 12\, 21\, and 42\nWeather: If it is actively raining\, we will postpone or cancel the event. Please check our Facebook event listing by 11 a.m. on event day to confirm. \nEveryone is welcome — come as you are! We invite people of all backgrounds and abilities to join us\, including disabled and neurodivergent nature-lovers and their support people. We will move at a pace that honors the needs of the group and invite you to share any access needs in advance so we can make your experience as enjoyable as possible. \nWe’ll use apps like iNaturalist and Merlin Bird ID to help identify the park’s biodiversity\, and we encourage you to download the apps prior to the event\, but it is not required. We will help you to navigate these tools if they are new for you. While we won’t explore every corner of the park or encounter every species\, we will focus on some standout wildlife sure to spark your curiosity and wonder. Free Library birding backpacks and binoculars will be made available to everyone as supplies allow.

SUMMARY:Historic Rittenhouse Square Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the public art and historic properties in Rittenhouse Square\, then see the original documents at the Historical Society of PA.\n\n\nRittenhouse Square\, established in William Penn’s original plan for the city but developed 200 years later in the 19th century\, has long been a gathering place for city dwellers of all ages and interests. Featuring public art sculptures set amid designed spaces by architect Paul Cret\, the paths and grassy areas attract artists\, photographers\, families and vendors. Join education staff from the Association for Public Art and the Historical Society of Pennsylvania to learn about the early development of the square and the prominent civic leaders and artists who played a significant role in making Rittenhouse square an iconic public park. This walking tour will then continue several blocks east on Locust Street to the Historical Society of Pennsylvania\, where guests will have the opportunity to see a number of supporting documents and images that demonstrate the process between artists\, organizations like Fairmount Park Art Association (now Association for Public Art) and private citizens. The development of public spaces is never without a story.\n \nHosted in memory of Philip Price\, friend to both HSP and aPA. \nThis tour begins at the northeast corner of Rittenhouse Square\, 1800 Walnut Street\, near the Evelyn Memorial Price Memorial Sundial and will conclude at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania\,1300 Locust Street. This tour involves standing and walking on fairly even terrain\, some stairs\, and crowded city sidewalks. Light refreshments will be offered at the end of the tour at HSP. \n\n\nSpeakers’ Bios: \nCrishana Manigan is the Learning and Engagement Manager for the Association for Public Art (aPA). She oversees aPA’s public programs\, educational offerings\, and community engagement initiatives to advance aPA’s commitment to accessibility\, diversity\, equity\, and inclusiveness. \nJustina Barrett is Director of Education and Programs at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania\, where she oversees the development and execution of public book talks\, courses\, k-12 tours and teacher workshops. \nSelena Bemak is the Programs and Communications Coordinator for the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. She develops history-oriented programming related to HSP’s collections and oversees all institutional communications. \n\n\n\nThe Historical Society of Pennsylvania\, founded in 1824\, is one of the nation’s largest archives of historical documents. We are proud to serve as Philadelphia’s Library of American History\, with over 21 million manuscripts\, books\, and graphic images encompassing centuries of US history. Through educator workshops\, research opportunities\, public programs\, and lectures throughout the year\, we strive to make history relevant and exhilarating to all. For more information\, visit hsp.org. \n\n\n\nThe Association for Public Art (aPA) commissions\, preserves\, interprets\, and promotes public art in Philadelphia through exemplary projects\, programs\, digital media and advocacy efforts that connect people with public art. By engaging diverse audiences\, the aPA seeks to respond to the conditions of our time\, creating a legacy and maintaining a heritage for future generations\, while promoting Philadelphia as a premier city for public art.
