SUMMARY:Sentient Summer: The Art of Being Present
DESCRIPTION:Meeting at Rex Avenue Trailhead Kiosk (see map here)\nSummer invites us outdoors to enjoy her gifts! What do you notice? The joy of birdsong\, the scent of fresh rain\, the feel of the earth beneath your feet? Do you want to learn how to become more intentional about your observations?\nThis program invites you to slow down and tune into the richness of the natural world\, igniting your senses in ways that foster a deeper connection to Mother Earth. We’ll have fun as we take time to notice the small natural details that spark delight. Whether you’re an experienced artist or a beginner or someone who’s always enjoyed spending time in nature\, this program will help you become more attuned to the beauty and complexity of the natural world.\nWe will explore how to strengthen your observational skills and creative writing techniques to complement your visual art. For those who are interested\, we’ll offer info on how to build a personalized nature journal to capture your experiences and reflections.\nBring your playful curiosity and a tool(s) of choice—for example\, a camera; a writing pen and paper; or your favorite medium (paintbrush\, drawing pencils/paper/ kneaded eraser etc.). We encourage you to bring something to sit on. This program will be led by FOW Trail Ambassadors Jane Klein\, Stan Kozakowski\, Stephanie Stein\, and Jean McWilliams\, and is for adults ages 18+.\n“When we see with clear eyes\, we know that we are surrounded by beauty. Let yourself fall in love with your life by paying attention.” – John Muir Laws\nDistance: 1 mile\nLevel: Moderate (some inclines and declines\, uneven surfaces)\nRegistration is required for all hikes so that participants can be informed of weather or other emergency cancellations.\nUnless otherwise specified\, Trail Ambassador Walks may be on rocky\, rugged trails that may be wet and slippery. Wear sturdy shoes or boots with socks. Walks are cancelled in heavy rain or icy conditions. Service animals are always welcome. For more information contact Marisa Miller at miller@fow.org. Visit www.fow.org for updates.\nRegister below!

SUMMARY:The Wissahickon in June with Debbie Hoellein\, Jim McClory\, and Doug Gibson
DESCRIPTION:Photo courtesy of Debbie Hoellein\nMeeting at Rex Avenue Trailhead Kiosk (see map here)\nJoin Debbie\, Jim\, and Doug as we hike the Wissahickon at the close of the first week of summer. We will visit Sarah’s Rock and the Looking West statue\, and enjoy other sights of natural and historical interest. Although we are starting from the same spot as our February hike\, we will stay mostly on the east side of the Wissahickon Creek\, with just a bit of time on Forbidden Drive.\nOur approximately 4-4.5 mile route includes some steep and rocky ascents and descents and is a bit more difficult than the hike we did from the Rex trailhead in February\, so come prepared with sturdy shoes (and trekking poles if you have them!).\nChildren 12 years of age and older are welcome when accompanied by an adult\, but\, please\, no dogs except for service animals.\nDistance: 4-4.5 miles\nLevel: Difficult (many inclines and declines\, uneven surfaces)\nRegistration is required for all hikes so that participants can be informed of weather or other emergency cancellations.\nUnless otherwise specified\, Trail Ambassador Walks may be on rocky\, rugged trails that may be wet and slippery. SUMMARY:The Wissahickon in February with Debbie Hoellein and Jim McClory
DESCRIPTION:Photo courtesy of Chuck Uniatowski\nMeeting at the Rex Avenue Trailhead Kiosk\nJoin Debbie and Jim on our last hike of the winter. This month we’ll be appreciating some of the work done by the FOW in 2024 as we traverse 2 reroutes and walk across the new pedestrian bridge. And we’ll note the beautiful vistas before the trees leaf up in the spring. We’ll pass by some areas of historical and cultural interest and also some beautiful rocks.\nOur route is about 3.5 miles and includes some rocky ascents and descents. Save some energy for the climb up to Rex Avenue at the end.\nChildren 12 years of age and older are welcome when accompanied by an adult\, but\, please\, no dogs except for service animals.\nDistance: 3.5 miles\nLevel: Difficult (many inclines and declines\, uneven surfaces)\nRegistration is required for all hikes so that participants can be informed of weather or other emergency cancellations.\nUnless otherwise specified\, Trail Ambassador Walks may be on rocky\, rugged trails that may be wet and slippery.
