SUMMARY:Gaining Ground: The Fight For Black Land | Movie Screening + Panel
DESCRIPTION:The City Archives & Legacy Reclaimed presents this insightful event to explore the history\, challenges & resilience of Black land ownership.\n\n\nGaining Ground | The Fight For Black Land\nTuesday\, June 25 | 5:30PM – 8PM\nPA Convention Center (13th & Arch Entrance) | Michael A. Nutter Theatre\n \nJoin us for a special event featuring a screening of the documentary “Gaining Ground: The Fight For Black Land\,” followed by a panel discussion. The evening will begin with welcome remarks by Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker. The film\, with a 90-minute runtime\, delves into the significant issue of Black land loss and the efforts to reclaim it. \n \nAfter the screening\, a panel discussion will be led by a WURD host\, featuring: \n– Tharlyn Fox\, LEAP Manager for John Deere Company \n– Ebony Woodruff\, an agricultural law attorney based in New Orleans \n– Angie Smith\, one of the film’s producers \n \nDon’t miss this inspiring and informative event that highlights the resilience and determination of Black landowners in reclaiming their agricultural legacy. \n\n\nAbout the Film:\n \nThe idea for “Gaining Ground” originated when producer Denise Hurst Green read an article about heirs’ property. She brought the idea to Al Roker Entertainment\, and with the support of John Deere’s Tharlyn Fox\, filmmaker Eternal Polk was brought on board to write and direct the project. Completed in late 2022\, the documentary has been well-received at numerous film festivals in 2023\, winning several awards\, including Best Feature Film and Best Documentary. \n \nJohn Deere’s involvement in the film underscores its commitment to important storytelling\, aiming to connect audiences with the real-life impacts of heirs’ property issues and spark meaningful change. The film’s goals are to raise awareness about the complexities of heirs’ property\, educate people on available resources\, and encourage support for organizations helping families secure clear titles and unlock their land’s value for future generations.
