SUMMARY:Printmaking By The People Exhibition Opening
DESCRIPTION:Participants in workshops around the city created their own art to express their ideas about the rights that are crucial for a just society.\n\n\nMural Arts Philadelphia and the Free Library of Philadelphia present Printmaking by the People: Posters for a Reimagined Declaration of Independence\, an exhibition of hundreds of posters created by Philadelphians who were asked to share their visions of “life\, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” This special exhibition is part of Printmaking by the People\, Philadelphia’s largest 2026 public art and community engagement project inspired by the 250th anniversary of the country’s founding. \nPrintmaking by the People opens at the Parkway Central Library’s Heim Center for Civic and Cultural Engagement on Thursday\, April 16\, with a free opening reception from 5:30–7:30 pm\, and runs through August 2026. The reception will include a pop-up printmaking station\, giving attendees the opportunity to share their own ideas and add to the conversation. \nThe exhibition is presented by a curatorial team that includes Todd W. Bressi (Public Art Project Specialist\, Mural Arts Philadelphia)\, Suzanna Urminska (Curator of Exhibitions\, Free Library of Philadelphia)\, and David K. Coleman Jr. (Exhibition Designer and Curatorial Advisor). The exhibition documents the voice of Philadelphians as expressed through posters they made in 35 Printmaking by the People workshops that took place across the city in 2024 and 2025. These workshops were led by more than 30 local artists working in a range of printmaking techniques. \nPrintmaking by the People is made possible by the Philadelphia Funder Collaborative for the Semiquincentennial and the City of Philadelphia\, with lead partners Free Library of Philadelphia and Visit Philadelphia. \nComplete lists of project partners\, artists\, advisors\, and workshop host organizations can be found at the Printmaking by the People project page.

SUMMARY:Library of Life
DESCRIPTION:The Library of Life Book Tour is designed to highlight both books and life resources as tools for healing and growth.\n\n\nThis event is free and open to the public. It will be held in Rooms 131/132 in the Heim Center. Registration is not required yet seating is limited. There will be an opportunity to purchase Ciara’s book after the presentation. \nRooted in my book Cliché Your Way Through Life REMIX\, each event blends storytelling\, therapy-inspired reflection\, and practical life tools. By connecting the metaphor of the library with real-life resources\, the program encourages participants to see both literature and community as guides for navigating challenges\, building resilience\, and creating lives they don’t want to escape. \nCiara Ward – Bio \nCiara Ward is a licensed clinical therapist\, conflict resolution specialist\, author\, and founder of Ci Notes\, a platform that provides tools for emotional healing\, life skills\, and authentic living. With over eight years of experience in hospitals\, courts\, schools\, and private practice\, she supports individuals and families through some of life’s toughest moments. \nKnown as the Librarian of Life\, Ciara blends her personal story with clinical expertise to help people heal the parts of themselves they were taught to hide. Her journey from trauma survivor to therapist\, mentor\, doula\, and educator is living proof that everything she needed\, she became. Ciara works with people of all ages\, cultures\, and backgrounds\, reminding us that therapy is not just for the couch. It is for the world.

SUMMARY:From Kelpius to the Rod of Iron: Cults and New Religious Movements in Pennsylvania
DESCRIPTION:The state of Pennsylvania and the city of Philadelphia are home to a diverse array of churches and religious organizations. This program will outline the history of some of the most famous religious monuments of our region. We will begin in the 17th century with the figure of Johannes Kelpius\, a German Pietist who established an apocalyptic religious community in the Wissahickon Valley. We will then move to the 19th century to examine the Theosophical Society\, a new religion that merged East and West\, whose United Lodge is still located in Center City. We will conclude by discussing the Iron Rod Ministries\, an offshoot of the Korean American Unification Church\, which until recently was headquartered in Wayne County\, east of the city of Scranton. \nOri Tavor is a Senior Lecturer in Chinese Studies and Director of the MA Program at the department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations\, the University of Pennsylvania. He studies the history of utopian thought\, new religion movements\, and the intersection between religion and the state. \nAttend this program in person in the Education\, Philosophy and Religion Department\, or view it live on Zoom by registering at https://freelibrary-org.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_cNQ2q3fvQ4CqWBN9IgeFXw#/registration
