SUMMARY:Visible Mending Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join Julie Woodard\, founder of Juicebox Workshop\, to explore some foundational methods for extending the life of items in your closet!\n\n\nVisible Mending Workshop \n \nJoin Julie Woodard\, founder of Juicebox Workshop\, to explore some foundational methods for extending the life of items in your closet! Attendees should bring a garment with a hole\, snag\, or stain\, that they would like to repair (non-stretch heavyweight cotton or wool is ideal). Julie will provide an overview of mending techniques\, tools\, and tips for getting started\, from selecting a needle and thread\, to practicing basic types of stitches. This workshop will focus on developing skills and confidence around the art of patching. Julie will share examples and demonstrate techniques from her own closet that feature patched\, appliquéd\, and embroidered mends. Participants will go home with a visibly mended garment and the skills and creative inspiration to continue repairing and revitalizing items in their wardrobe. This workshop is open to teens and adults. Basic hand sewing experience is helpful\, but not required. \n \nParticipants should bring: \nA garment to mend (non-stretch heavyweight cotton or wool is ideal) \nFavorite fabric scraps (optional) \n \nAbout the Artist: \nArtist Julie “Juicebox” Woodard splits her time between mountain trails and the streets of Philadelphia. \nUsing salvaged textiles\, found objects\, pigments and thread\, she creates impressionistic landscapes\, multimedia installations\, functional sculptures\, and wearable pieces that convey her passion for nature\, memory\, and creative reuse. Current incarnations pay tribute to her late mom and repurpose family heirlooms\, as well as feature vintage goods\, cutting room remnants\, broken furniture\, and street debris. \nJulie’s artistic practice incorporates elements of collage\, animation\, applique\, embroidery\, quilting\, painting\, printmaking\, songwriting\, and sculpture. The “juice” is the joy Julie seeks to create and the “box” is her platform for storytelling and environmental advocacy. Every piece has a story. Every material is repurposed with purpose.
