SUMMARY:Wildflowers in Color: Botanical Drawing
DESCRIPTION:Bring yourself to the next level with drawing native wildflowers from Mt. Cuba’s unique collections. Continue to learn basic botanical drawing skills\, such as composition\, scale\, and perspective\, while introducing simple color techniques that add another dimension to your work. A series of step-by-step exercises\, instructor demonstrations\, and one-on one feedback sessions provide a strong foundation in botanical drawing. Students may work in watercolor or colored pencil. A detailed list of required materials is provided with registration. \nThis program takes place in-person at Mt. Cuba Center Four Thursdays: 4/30 through 5/21. \n About the Instructor: \nMargaret Saylor is a working studio artist based in southeastern Pennsylvania. She works primarily in egg tempera on panel and graphite on vellum\, with paintings and drawings that focus on plants\, fungi\, and the intimate ecology of the forest floor — rendered with the precision of a field naturalist and the eye of a designer. Her work is held in the permanent collection at the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation at Carnegie Mellon University. She also serves as editor and designer of The Botanical Artist\, the quarterly journal of the American Society of Botanical Artists. \nREGISTER NOW: \nGeneral Public \nIndividual+ & Dual+ Members \nSupporter\, Advocate & Conservator Members \n

SUMMARY:Early Season Garden Care
DESCRIPTION:Gardens can quickly get away from us in the summertime\, with elevated temperatures and rainfall causing many plants to grow in leaps and bounds. Learn and discuss approaches to early-summer maintenance to help you stay ahead of challenges experienced in the throes of the growing season\, from simple techniques\, like managing the size of those oft-flopping tall perennials with a simple “Chelsea Chop\,” to more complex management strategies. \nThis program takes place in-person at Mt. Cuba Center Sunday\, April 26\, 2026. \n About the Instructor: \nOlivia is a designer at GreenWeaver Landscapes\, a design-build company providing ecological landscape design\, construction\, and gardening to southeastern Pennsylvania and northern Delaware. Olivia worked in public gardens for several years before returning to landscape design with a renewed interest in landscape management and sustainability. They are particularly interested in artistic planting design\, taking cues from native plant communities and environments. They hold a degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Delaware. \nREGISTER NOW: \nGeneral Public \nIndividual+ & Dual+ Members \nSupporter\, Advocate & Conservator Members \n

SUMMARY:Preserving Iconic Wildflowers: Trillium
DESCRIPTION:Mt. Cuba’s premier collection of native trilliums provides a spectacular floral display each spring. Enjoy an informative overview of our efforts to protect and conserve this iconic genus and their culture and care as garden plants. A tour of our woodland gardens to see these jewels of the forest floor completes the day. A copy of Trilliums of Mt. Cuba Center is included. Class is rain or shine. \nThis program takes place in-person at Mt. Cuba Center Sunday\, April 26\, 2026. \n About the Instructor: \nÉlan Alford\, Plant Conservation Scientist at Mt. Cuba Center\, earned a B.S. in Ecology & Evolution at the University of Pittsburgh and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Ecology at Colorado State University. Élan initially worked in ecological consulting where she conducted rare plant\, habitat\, and wetland surveys. With survey knowledge she aided clients to achieve their projects in a regulatory-compliant manner. After seeing many remarkable sites during her private-sector career\, Élan transitioned from finding practical and responsible environmental solutions in development to a conservation-centered approach. Now Elan focuses on using survey and data to tell native plant stories. \nREGISTER NOW: \nGeneral Public \nIndividual+ & Dual+ Members \nSupporter\, Advocate & Conservator Members \n

SUMMARY:Trillium and Wine: Complementary Pairings (Canceled)
DESCRIPTION:This program has been canceled as of 4/22/26. \nGreat wine and food pairings work because they either echo one another or create striking contrasts—and the same principles can be applied to the natural world. Join renowned scent ecologist Dr. Robert Raguso for a one of a kind sensory experience that blends botany\, chemistry\, and the art of tasting. \nDr. Raguso has spent decades studying the floral scents of native plant species\, including trilliums—one of Mt. Cuba’s signature collections. Unlike conventional flowers\, trilliums release unexpected fragrances reminiscent of wine\, cheese\, fruit\, and spices. Drawing on his pioneering research in chemical ecology and plant pollinator communication\, Dr. Raguso has curated a “flight” of Mt. Cuba trilliums paired with wines that complement their earthy\, woodsy aromas. \nIn this immersive class\, explore the chemistry behind trillium scents\, their ecological significance\, and the surprising ways they align with the flavor profiles of selected wines. As you taste and compare\, take note of the pairings that resonate with you—each one revealing a deeper connection between plants\, pollinators\, and the sensory world we share. \nExperience a rare opportunity to learn from a leading expert whose work has transformed our understanding of floral scent and biodiversity\, and enjoy an unforgettable journey through the fragrances and flavors of spring.\n(Ages 21 and over) \nThis program takes place in-person at Mt. Cuba Center Saturday\, April 25\, 2026. An evening section of this program runs Friday\, April 24. \n About the Instructor: \nRobert Raguso\, PhD\, is a professor of Chemical Ecology at Cornell University. His research interests run the spectrum of insect-plant interactions mediated by chemistry\, especially the role of fragrance in pollination ecology and animal behavior. He has promoted his research by organizing symposia\, short courses\, and workshops world-wide.

SUMMARY:Owl Howl: Section D
DESCRIPTION:Many people have heard an owl\, but few have ever seen one. Mt. Cuba’s varied landscapes and topography provide the ideal habitats for three of Delaware’s native owl species – the barred\, great horned\, and Eastern screech – and winter is the best time to spot them roosting in our trees. Owls are nocturnal so join us as we search for them just after dusk. Following a brief introductory lecture\, we’ll head into the garden and listen to their unique calls. Dress for the weather. \nThis program takes place in-person at Mt. Cuba Center Friday\, February 6\, 2026 (Rain Date: Friday\, 2/13). \n About the Instructor: \nJoe Sebastiani is the Director of Adult Engagement for the Delaware Nature Society. He is passionate about birds and wildlife\, founded the Ashland Hawk Watch\, and edits Delaware eBird\, an online checklist program\, for the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. \nIan Stewart\, PhD\, was raised in Newcastle\, England and received a doctorate in ornithology from the University of Leicester. He has conducted research on tree swallows and bluebirds and how local land management activities are affecting bird numbers and diversity throughout the year. Ian works for the Delaware Nature Society where he is studying the effects of non-native plants on birds. \nREGISTER NOW: \nGeneral Public \nIndividual+ & Dual+ Members \nSupporter\, Advocate & Conservator Members
