SUMMARY:Working with Natural Dyes
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a hands-on workshop where you’ll create a beautiful scarf using dyes extracted from natural sources such as indigo—one of the most historically significant dyes in early American craft. As the nation marks its 250th year\, this class offers a unique opportunity to connect with the skills\, materials\, and traditions that shaped daily life in the 18th and 19th centuries. \nInstructor Diane Keesee will explore the historic uses of natural dyes in early America\, from the role of indigo in colonial trade to the ways communities relied on local plants for color long before synthetic dyes existed. You’ll learn how to identify dye-producing plants in your region\, along with responsible harvesting practices that honor both the land and the traditions passed down through generations. \nParticipants will be guided through preparation and dyeing techniques using natural mordants and modifiers—methods that would have been familiar to early American artisans. By the end of the workshop\, you’ll have created your own naturally dyed scarf and gained a deeper appreciation for the heritage skills that helped color the fabric of American history.\nCelebrate this milestone year by learning a craft that connects past and present and share these time-honored techniques with friends and family. \nThis program takes place in-person at Mt. Cuba Center Saturday\, July 11\, 2026. \n🥬 Gift or take home \n About the Instructor: \nDiane Keesee has a passion for creating interesting signature cocktails\, spirit infusions\, shrubs\, and bitters\, using unique seasonal ingredients. SUMMARY:Planting for Specialist Pollinators
DESCRIPTION:Specialist pollinators need our help more than ever. While generalist bees and butterflies can use a wide range of plants\, many caterpillars\, bees\, and other insects rely on very specific native species for food\, shelter\, and reproduction. When those plants disappear from our landscapes\, the pollinators that depend on them disappear as well. \nIn this class\, you’ll learn how to make a meaningful difference right in your own backyard. Discover the essential trees\, shrubs\, and wildflowers that support specialist pollinators—and how even small additions to your garden can create vital habitat. Instructor Leah Brooks will introduce a diverse selection of native perennials and highlight the remarkable relationships between these plants and the specialist species that rely on them for survival. The class includes a guided garden walk with Leah\, where you’ll see these plants in person and observe how they function in a living landscape. \nLeave inspired\, informed\, and ready to support specialist pollinators through thoughtful\, impactful plant choices. \nThis program takes place in-person at Mt. Cuba Center Tuesday\, June 23\, 2026. Online-only attendance is also available for this class\, click here to learn more and to register. \n🥬 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) available \n About the Instructor: \nLeah Brooks is the Marketing Coordinator at Mt. Cuba. She has dual bachelor’s degrees from the University of Delaware in Environmental Science and Wildlife Ecology. She is a Delaware Master Naturalist and Vice Chair of the Delaware Invasive Species Council. She’s an avid contributor to the Delaware Native Plant Identification and Exchange group on Facebook. SUMMARY:Gin & Juniper
DESCRIPTION:From garden to glass\, this well loved spirit has evolved from an herbal remedy to a staple behind the bar. Originating in the Middle Ages and popularized during the reign of King William III\, gin has long derived its signature flavor from juniper berries. While European juniper is the traditional source\, our own native eastern red cedar Juniperus virginiana has played an important historical role as well. \nHighly valued for its aromatic wood\, ecological importance\, and abundant berry like cones\, eastern red cedar was used by early American distillers as a local juniper substitute\, lending gin its characteristic piney\, resinous notes. Today\, this native species continues to be recognized for its cultural history\, wildlife value\, and unique contribution to botanical spirits. \nIn this class\, explore the evolution of gin\, the botanical diversity behind its production\, and the significance of junipers—both Old World and New World—in shaping its flavor. Learn how different distillers incorporate herbs\, spices\, fruits\, and native botanicals to create distinct styles. The session concludes with a guided tasting of gins showcasing a range of ingredients and flavor profiles.\n(Ages 21 and over) \nThis program takes place in-person at Mt. Cuba Center Saturday\, June 20\, 2026. \n About the Instructor: \nDiane Keesee has a passion for creating interesting signature cocktails\, spirit infusions\, shrubs\, and bitters\, using unique seasonal ingredients. SUMMARY:Guiding Naturalistic Gardens into Maturity
DESCRIPTION:Naturalistic garden design supports wildlife and the environment by creating diverse\, integrating plant communities\, but it can be complicated to manage these gardens over time\, an approach that lies at the heart of Mt. Cuba Center’s horticultural practice. Within these landscape designs\, plants are allowed to interact\, compete\, and evolve\, revealing both the beauty and the complexity of managing living systems. \nIn this class\, explore how to honor a design vision while encouraging ecological processes to take place freely. Utilizing strategies like thoughtful plant selection\, encouraging self-seeding\, balancing plant competitiveness\, and selective editing\, learn how to gently guide naturalistic gardens into maturity with less garden care intervention over time. \nThis class includes an instructor led tour of the Mt. Cuba gardens\, where you will see examples of how the horticulture team makes decisions that balance plant competition and selective editing to maintain the integrity of design.  Leave feeling emboldened to take on your own naturalistic garden\, prioritizing lower maintenance. You will receive a comprehensive take-home resource that includes design theory and management practices. \nThis program takes place in-person at Mt. Cuba Center Saturday\, May 30\, 2026. \n🥬 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) available \n🥬 New class \n About the Instructor: \nLeah Blanton is a planting designer and horticulturist\, using her artistic eye and plant knowledge to create functional urban landscapes for the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society\, where she designs a diverse range of public horticulture projects in Philadelphia. SUMMARY:Planning for a Garden Transition
DESCRIPTION:Change in the garden is inevitable. A maturing tree may cast more shade than expected\, or a sudden storm\, or even a neighbor can remove a tree overnight\, leaving your once-shaded garden in full\, blazing sun. These shifts can feel abrupt and overwhelming\, but they also create opportunities for renewal\, creativity\, and even unexpected joy. \nIn this class\, we’ll explore how to recognize\, assess\, and respond to transitions in your landscape with confidence. Learn how to monitor changes in sun exposure\, evaluate shifts in soil moisture\, and make thoughtful decisions about plant care and selection when conditions suddenly change. \nGarden Coach Nancy Bell\, who has years of experience guiding homeowners through evolving landscapes\, will share practical strategies for adapting to new realities in the garden—whether the change is gradual or immediate. This class includes a walk through the Mt. Cuba gardens with Nancy noting areas of maturation and disturbance and discussion of insights and advice for planning for a garden transition into your space. Class is held rain or shine. \nThis program takes place in-person at Mt. Cuba Center Friday\, May 29\, 2026. \n🥬 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) available \n🥬 New class \n About the Instructor: \nNancy Bell is the Education and Garden Coach Coordinator at Gateway Garden Center in Hockessin.
