SUMMARY:Annual Nesting Bird Census
DESCRIPTION:Grab binoculars and join us in counting birds at Mariton. Since 1981\, staff and volunteers have conducted an annual nesting bird census to count the number of species and individual birds breeding at this 200-acre preserve. \nThe census results serve as an important tool to help assess habitat management strategies. Healthy habitats sustain various nesting species\, including flycatchers\, tanagers\, thrushes\, and warblers. Mariton’s woodlands are particularly important to birds like the Wood Thrush\, which requires large forests for nesting.

SUMMARY:Fungi Foray with Philly Myco Club
DESCRIPTION:Join Philadelphia Mycology Club’s Kevin Popowich for a Fungi Foray along the trails of Mariton Wildlife Sanctuary to discover and uncover the wonderful world of mycology. Together\, we’ll explore the steep slopes of Bougher Hill overlooking the scenic Delaware River and see what mushrooms and other fungi we can find.    \nWhat is a foray? Different than foraging\, which is the pursuit of only edible species\, forays are a survey of the mushroom diversity in an ecological landscape. We will adhere to Natural Lands’ Leave No Trace policy and not remove any mushrooms or other plant material from the preserve.  \nBefore we start hunting for mushrooms\, we’ll congregate for a brief introduction with an informational handout. This program will cover identification\, safety\, look-alikes\, and resources to help you continue your fungal adventures.   \nAbout our partner: A Philadelphia-based nonprofit\, Philadelphia Mycology Club’s mission is to study\, collect\, and document fungi; to foster accessibility\, diversity\, and inclusivity through educating the community on fungi; and to steward the land and advocate for fungal conservation. They work with other environmental groups in and around Philadelphia to provide free and accessible mushroom guidance in an urban setting and to work towards common goals of environmental justice.

SUMMARY:Edible and Medicinal Plant Walk
DESCRIPTION:Join our partner\, Heather Houskeeper—also known as The Botanical Hiker—in exploring the array of edible and medicinal plants at Mariton Wildlife Sanctuary. Heather will provide valuable methods for confident identification\, ethical harvest\, and easy preparation. Many edible or medicinal plants may be found in your own backyard\, in the garden as common weeds\, or in other natural places you frequent.   \nLearn how to transform these wild plants into delicious snacks\, medicinal teas\, and home remedies. The walk will be easy to moderate with many stops along the way to meet the plants. \nPlease note that this walk is educational in nature and that no plants will be harvested from the preserve. All of Natural Lands’ properties are Leave No Trace; foraging is not permitted. \nJust some of the plants you might see on this walk include staghorn sumac and birch (pictured below). \n \nPhotos provided by the instructor. \nAbout the instructor: \nHeather Houskeeper\, “The Botanical Hiker\,” is an herbalist\, author\, and founder of the School of Plant and Place Connection in Milford\, PA. She holds certifications in herbal medicine\, botany\, taxonomy\, and forest therapy. Heather has hiked thousands of miles on long-distance trails—including the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine—identifying\, exploring\, and foraging wild plants along the way. These journeys have deeply inspired her work as an herbal educator. Since 2011\, Heather has guided others into the natural world through plant walks\, herbal workshops\, and seminars. She is the author of three plant-inspired books and the Wild Food columnist for Dirt Magazine. Heather believes plants are a conduit for connection with the natural world\, and that by attuning to nature\, we foster individual and collective wellness. Learn more about Heather at: www.SchoolofPlantandPlaceConnection.com and on social media @The Botanical Hiker.

SUMMARY:Annual Migratory Bird Census
DESCRIPTION:Preserve Manager Zane Miller guides this annual citizen-science effort to document birds at our Mariton Wildlife Sanctuary. Two decades of data reflects impressive avian diversity; birders find an average of 50 species each year.   \nMariton includes various habitats for thrushes\, flycatchers\, tanagers\, and a dozen warbler species. The Migratory Bird Census offers a great opportunity to hone observation skills and learn more about the species that migrate through the region.
