SUMMARY:Final Philly Unwrapped Community Engagement Event
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the sixth and final session of Philly Unwrapped\, a coalition-driven initiative working to establish a city-wide reuse system in Philadelphia. Over the past year\, this series has brought together restaurant owners\, cafés\, caterers\, corner stores\, food trucks\, event venues\, hospitality operators\, community leaders\, and public officials to explore practical waste prevention strategies that work in Philadelphia. This session is proudly co-hosted with the Eastwick Friends and Neighbors Coalition (EFNC)\, an Environmental Justice community organization in Southwest Philadelphia’s Eastwick neighborhood\, a traditionally underserved community low-lying\, predominantly minority area built on former marshland at the confluence of Darby and Cobbs Creeks\, where climate change is worsening already-severe flood risk (First Street Foundation estimates roughly 1\,536 properties face major flood risk over the next 30 years). For over a decade\, the coalition’s President Earl Wilson and Vice President Ramona Rousseau Reid of Eastwick Friends & Neighbors Coalition have led environmental justice work there\, with the collaboration of major supporting environmental groups\, multiple residents stopping a proposed apartment housing development consisting of 722 unit apartment complex\, 1\,043 parking spaces on 35 acres of land near 86th Street & Lindbergh Blvd. adjacent to John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge. The site was zoned for single-family homes and included areas designated by FEMA as a Special Flood Hazard Area\, making it highly vulnerable to flooding in the Eastwick community along Darby Creek that would have worsened flooding for existing homes. In addition\, the Eastwick community\, and historic organizing that forced the closure of the Clearview Landfill in 1973 and pushed for EPA testing of toxins on the site a concern made urgent by nearby industrial land\, including the former largest oil refinery on the Eastern Seaboard\, since floodwaters can carry contaminants into residential areas. More recently\, the city and FEMA have directed resilience funding toward the neighborhood\, including a $2M+ FEMA grant.\nThis session is split into two parts. First\, we’ll walk through how to get the most out of the Philly Unwrapped Toolkit\, a free resource built to help businesses reduce single-use packaging\, cut costs\, and build stronger community trust. Then Trash Academy will lead a community SWOC session\, an open discussion on the strengths\, weaknesses\, opportunities\, and challenges of reuse and waste reduction efforts across Philadelphia.\nIf you’re in the food\, beverage\, event\, or hospitality sector\, or you support these industries through a CDC\, neighborhood association\, represent a city agency or office or community-based organization\, or concerned citizen\, this session is for you\, whether you’ve been with us since the launch or are just getting involved\, your voice is critical and we welcome you.\nPhilly Unwrapped is managed by ECHO Systems and funded by the Region 3 EPA Thriving Communities Green and Healthy Home Initiative\, in partnership with SBN\, ReThink Disposable/Clean Water Fund & Trash Academy. Visitors to the refuge may observe hundreds of species of plants\, trees\, birds\, insects and mammals. \nBy assisting with park cleanup\, you can help ensure that the center is enjoyed by generations to come! \nWhat we will be doing on Saturday\, July 11th 9:00am -12:00pm: \nYou’ll have the chance to help sustain the John Heinz Center by removing invasive plants throughout the park. \nNotes ahead of the event! \n\nVolunteers should come prepared with clothing appropriate for the work: long breathable pants and shirts\, and closed toed shoes\nAfter volunteering\, we will go to a local bar/restaurant for a celebratory afterjawn!\n\n \nParking & Transportation \n\nParking: The parking lot at the center fills quickly on the weekends. DESCRIPTION:Join LO Philly and Fishadelphia for a family fun Oyster workshop at John Heinz NWR.\n\n\nOyster Specialist\, Shley Suarez-Burgos will guide participants into the history\, biology\, culture and ecology of oysters within the North East coastlines. Fishadelphia Assistant Fish Packing Manager\, Ronnie Bee\, will lead an artistic craft utilizing recycled oyster shells from local restaurants. There will even be fun giveaway prizes. This event is open to all ages and families. Folks are encouraged to stay post the event to explore John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge. \n \nFishadelphia connects communities to create solutions for everyone. Seafood harvesters need to sell their catch\, and city folks love eating seafood; we meet these needs by bringing fresh seafood directly from the NJ shore into culturally and economically diverse communities in Philadelphia.So what exactly do we DO? Typically we offer a seafood subscription program (a community-supported fishery) in the Philadelphia region. We host community events. We also run youth programmingfor high school students who learn about business and seafood.The past year or so most of these operations have been on pause while we took the time to build some needed systems and structures internally to help strengthen Fishadelphia and lesson the possibility of burnout from the team. Also to take time to get re-aligned with our values\, mission\, and goals. Present day we are in much better standing and slowing getting the gears turning again. We hope to have fish distribution and youth program up and running again soon. She has been shucking and leading community oyster events for over 3 years. She has paired oysters with poems\, led tastings for international food festivals\, and shared about the history\, art\, culture\, and ecology of oysters along the east coast. Shley is also a board member of the North American Marine Alliance and a guide for the Everglades National Park. When she’s not shucking you can find her playing mermaids in the waters of Biscayne Bay. \n \nJohn Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum was established for the purposes of preserving\, restoring\, and developing the natural area known as Tinicum Marsh. In addition\, the refuge was established to provide environmental education and an opportunity to study nature. Today\, the refuge leads by example in our community engagement\, environmental education and recreational programming\, using a community focus as the foundation. \n \nPlease fill out this waiver .

There will be a live animal demonstration from Elmwood Zoo at 11 am and another from Aark Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Center at 1 pm. Friends of Heinz Refuge will be presenting the photo contest awards at 12 pm. No registration needed\, free all day!
