SUMMARY:Capturing the Surreal
DESCRIPTION:Capturing the Surreal highlights the work of three artists inventing bright and new realities. Vibrant\, color-forward\, and an explosion of energy\, each artist’s work is a commentary on society that begins with the question: what is real and what isn’t? Through photography\, artificial reality\, and animation\, the artists evoke dream-like fantasies that intertwine their lived experiences with their interaction between the physical and the virtual world. Immersive and powerful\, their work dives into a space of light and color that threads humorous narratives of the visually and conceptually surreal. Kelli Williams and Charmaine Caire bring puppets\, dolls\, and figurines to life in their photography\, Williams with a certain familiarity with the so-present social media space\, Caire in the absurd scenarios she stages\, both existing in the in-between of reality and fiction. Eva Wu’s potent and saturated use of color and textures extorts intimate otherworldly dimensions reminding us we are somewhere idyllic\, somewhere unfamiliar.

SUMMARY:Storytelling with Saundra Gilliard and On Blackness: Artist Talks and Panel
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Saturday\, April 13th from 3 – 5 pm for a hybrid artist talks and a panel on Blackness in America\n\n\nPlease join us on Saturday\, April 13th from 1:30 – 5:30 pm for a hybrid cultural sharing artist talks\, panel\, and storytelling event Blackness in America in conjunction with the exhibition Dolls\, Idols\, and Ideals. Artists Kimberly Camp and Emilio Maldonado are joined by Storyteller Saundra Gilliard \nThe afternoon will open with a performance by Saundra Gilliard who will weave together a collection of stories from West Africa\, Black America\, and the Caribbean\, which have inspired the artists in Dolls\, Idols\, and Ideal. These stories will help audiences better understand the work and the conversations within. Doors will open at 1:30 pm\, and the performance will start at 2:00 pm. \nWe will continue with two mini-artist talks from Kimberly Camp and Emilio Maldonado\, the featured artists of Dolls\, Idols\, and Ideals. After a short introduction\, Kimberly\, Emilio\, and Gilliard will be joined by guest moderator Erlin Geffrard to discuss Blackness in America. Guests will be able to select if they would like to join virtually or in person during checkout. Virtual audiences will be sent a Zoom link in the days before the event. \n \n________ \nAbout our Guests: \n \nSaundra Gilliard is a nationally recognized Storyteller and Personal Transformation Leader. For the past 20 years\, her stage performances and training “playshops” have promoted and cultivated Sacred Feminine Practices and techniques. Saundra is the founder of Femininely Free!\, and the current co-chair of the Philadelphia Folklore Project. \n \nDolls\, Idols\, and Ideals features Kimberly Camp and Emilio Maldonado\, two Black artists investigating their identity\, label\, lineage\, and how they create their own power while stranded in a “new world.” Camp and Maldonado artists use symbols – made or found – that reference their ancestry and spirituality. Rather than working from a notion of unchanging traditions\, they engage with aesthetics and amalgamated cultural practices that have been adapted in order to survive. Each artist finds strength\, magic\, and power in these shapeshifting\, resilient elements in full embrace and exploration of their individual and shared heritages.
