SUMMARY:Houston Playground June Learn to Ride Clinics
DESCRIPTION:1-hour Learn to Ride clinic for youth/adults. Bikes & helmets provided. Bring water\, dress for weather. Closed-toe shoes required.\n\n\nLearn to Ride Clinic\nThis 1-hour Learn to Ride clinic is designed for youth riders who are ready to build confidence\, balance\, and the basic skills needed to ride independently. \nYJR Outdoors provides bikes and helmets for participants\, or riders may bring their own bike if preferred. Our instructors use a calm\, step-by-step approach that breaks learning to ride into small\, manageable skills. The goal is to help each rider feel safe\, supported\, and successful — whether they are brand new to biking or almost ready to pedal on their own. \nWhat We’ll Cover\nHelmet Fit and Safety \nWe’ll begin with a simple safety check focused on helmet fit and comfort. Riders will learn why the buckle matters\, how the straps should sit around the ears and under the chin\, and how the helmet should fit securely on the head without sliding forward\, backward\, or side to side. \nBike Handling Basics \nBefore pedaling\, riders will get comfortable moving and controlling the bike. We’ll practice walking beside the bike — “push it like a shopping cart!” — using two hands\, basic steering\, stopping\, and safely getting on and off the bike. \nBraking and Balance \nRiders will learn how to use the brakes as an “anchor” to stop and stabilize the bike. From there\, we’ll work on balance-bike-style movement\, including pushing\, skating\, and finding balance while gently “fluttering” the handlebars to stay upright. \nGliding Before Pedaling \nOnce riders are comfortable balancing and steering\, we’ll introduce short glides. Gliding helps riders feel what balance on a bike is supposed to feel like before adding the complexity of pedaling. \nGlide to Ride \nAs riders build confidence\, we’ll move toward the first pedals. This may include practicing a strong starting position\, keeping the head up\, using “squash bugs” pressure through the pedals\, and learning the tripod position for starting from a stationary position with one pedal in the power position. \nWhat to Bring / Wear\nPlease bring water and dress for the weather. Riders should wear comfortable clothing that allows them to move easily. \nClosed-toe shoes are required. No Crocs\, sandals\, flip-flops\, or open-toed shoes. \nBikes and helmets are included\, but participants may bring their own properly working bike and helmet if they prefer.
