SUMMARY:Bird Walk Along the Wissahickon (Part 3) with Troy Bynum
DESCRIPTION:Meeting at Houston Playground (900 Grakyn Lane)\nGet to know the birds of Wissahickon Valley Park through this four-part guided bird walk series\, hosted by Troy Bynum of TB Wildlife Photography LLC in partnership with Friends of the Wissahickon. Participants will learn practical tips for identifying common species and gain insight into how different birds use the park’s diverse habitats throughout the seasons. Attend the full series to follow the changing landscape over time\, or join a single hike—everyone is welcome.\nDifficulty: Moderate (some inclines and declines\, uneven surfaces)\nParking: There should be plenty of free street parking along Grakyn Lane\, Sequoia Road\, and other neighborhood streets.\nBathrooms: There will not be bathrooms available along our route.\nTroy Bynum\, owner of TB Wildlife Photography LLC\, is not only an enthusiastic birder but also a passionate wildlife photographer from Philadelphia\, PA. Troy’s work focuses on capturing and showcasing the remarkable colors\, intricate patterns\, and rich textures that are abundant throughout the natural world. Troy’s work has been published by Discovery Warner Bros.\, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology\, Grid Magazine\, Northern Virginia Bird Alliance\, The Chestnut Hill Local\, and other regional publications. Troy is also an avid birder and experienced guide\, leading regional and international birding tours with Hillstar Nature\, Delmarva Birding Weekends\, DC Bird Alliance\, Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay\, and TB Wildlife Photography LLC to name a few organizations. Troy also volunteers as Field Trip Chair for Liberty Bird Alliance where he coordinates and often leads domestic and international birding trips for the members. Troy currently lives in Montgomery County with his wife and daughter and loves spending his free time with them birding\, hiking\, biking\, or playing bird-themed board games.\nNeed some binoculars for our hike? SUMMARY:Volunteer-Led Service Day: NW Corner
DESCRIPTION:Meeting at Houston Playground (900 Grakyn Ln\, Philadelphia\, PA 19128)\nParking: There is usually plenty of street parking on Sequoia Road and Grakyn Lane\, and you can find additional parking on the surrounding neighborhood streets. Bus 62 (9th-Market to Andorra) stops right next to the playground on Wissahickon Avenue and Grakyn Lane. See map for details.\nBathrooms: None\nDid you know Wissahickon Valley Park has over 50 miles of trails? Keeping them safe and enjoyable takes ongoing work\, and our trained Crew Leaders play a key role in this\, guiding small teams of Zone Stewards to care for different sections of the park.\nThis Saturday\, we’re bringing extra volunteer support to the park’s Northwest corner (Roxborough/Andorra area) for a variety of stewardship tasks. This service day is one in a series of Zone Steward-led service events happening throughout the summer.\nAll are welcome to attend\, and no experience is needed. We encourage attendees to work within their own comfort level\, and we always strive to accommodate needs on an individual basis. With that being said\, this service day may include the following activities:\n• Trail work: using long-handled tools for scraping\, digging\, tamping\, and cutting; moving heavy objects\n• Planting site preparation: using long handled tools for cutting\, scraping\, and digging\n• Invasive plant removal: bending over\, using long handled tools for cutting vines\n• Litter clean-up\nWe provide gloves\, tools\, and instruction–you just need to show up! Be sure to wear sturdy footwear and long pants\, and remember to bring water with you. Detailed information and confirmation of the meeting location will be sent by email one business day before the event.
